Our Home the Planet

Our Home the Planet

We’re on a mission to lower the environmental impact of your home.

From designing products that are built to last (think timeless pieces you’ll love forever) to being responsible within our own operations, we’re rethinking every step of our process, and building sustainability into all that we do.

We’re dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint, in line with our targets, and committed to reducing our impact on water stress - because every step counts in our journey to look after everyone’s home, the planet.

We are mindful that the planet provides the resources we use to create our products - and with every positive action we take, we aim to look after our home the planet while also creating the joy of truly feeling at home, now and for generations to come.

Responsible Operations

With 184 stores across the UK (and growing!) – not to mention our distribution centres, local depots and head offices, it’s safe to say there is a lot of opportunity to reduce our impact on the environment and operate more sustainably.

Being responsible matters, which is why we have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 – and net-zero by 2040 (FY19 baseline). So far, we have reduced emissions from our operations by 27%.

Stores

In FY24, we welcomed six shiny new stores to our Dunelm estate. But here’s the exciting part - despite our growth, our overall electricity use has actually dipped since FY19, and every bit of that energy is sourced from renewables.

We’re not stopping there - we’ve added solar panels to six of our stores, with plans to install even more next year. It’s all part of our commitment to protect our Planet, by mitigating environmental impacts of our business.

Packaging Approach and Progress

We know that we can’t completely ditch packaging - it keeps our products safe and sound – but we’re on a mission to make it better!

Our dedicated in-house packaging team are constantly exploring smarter, lower-impact alternatives to help reduce the amount of virgin plastic we use. In FY24 we made great strides, cutting the weight of virgin plastic in our own-brand packaging by 42% compared to our FY20 baseline. We also aimed for 30% recycled plastic in our primary packaging and came in strong at 29%.

On the plastic front, we’ve given our curtain bags a bit of a diet, saving a huge 5.2 tonnes of plastic! And our mattresses? They’re now boasting 50% recycled content—because who wouldn’t want to sleep on a cloud of sustainability?

Transport & Distribution

Bringing homeware happiness to your doorstep while reducing our impact on the Planet. Three sneak peaks into how we’ve improved our operations this year? Go on then..

  • We reduced absolute HDN emissions by 26% versus the year before.
  • We conducted driver training using telematics data to promote best practice in driving behaviours, fuel efficiency and safety.
  • We’ve changed the way our customers book delivery slots- avoiding split deliveries and saving an estimated 1,000 deliveries per year

Circularity

Transitioning to product circularity requires action at every stage of the product lifecycle. From implementing our Circularity Product Design principles, sourcing more responsible raw materials, using responsible operations to get them where they need to be and then encouraging up-cycling, repairing, recycling and takeback schemes to create a culture of circularity in our communities - each piece of the puzzle must work in order to transition to a circular economy.

  •   Commitment to Circular Design: We focus on lower-impact products by designing for reuse, repair, remanufacture, and recycling – while leveraging our own-brand control to utilise more responsibly sourced materials.
  •  Collaborative Circularity Efforts: Through our Better Manufacturing program, we work with suppliers to reduce their environmental impact by transitioning to renewable energy and implementing waste management.
  • Enhanced Customer Engagement: Offering repair instructions, in-store repair workshops, and a textile takeback scheme empowers customers to extend product lifespans and reduce waste.

Great to see Dunelm's commitment to building sustainability into all aspects of their business. It's important to note that sustainability is not just a trend, but a necessity for the future of our planet. I believe that circular design is key to achieving a sustainable future, and it's great to see Dunelm taking steps towards this. In addition to renewable energy and smarter packaging, incorporating recycled materials into products and offering repair and recycling services can also contribute to a circular economy. #sustainability #circulareconomy #environmentallyfriendly
