After experiencing a strange February, we are forced to realize things have changed. 15 degrees one day- 78 the next. Things have changed.

You would think since water is such a crucial component to everything around us, our approach would be proactive, resilient, and clear.

However the reality is our approach to Managing Nutrients is reactionary. Controlling costs, let alone providing sustainable solutions is near impossible under these conditions. Forecasting is fuzzy, blurry, & a guessing game.

Construction

• Civil Engineers specify solutions for sediment control with no clear maintenance schedule in place.
• Water Quality isn't the determining factor for performance.
• Contractors bid projects for product and install. Maintenance isn't a component in a low bid world.

How do we fix this?

1. Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance: If you set maintenance schedules based on performance, time periods, and/or rainfall events you will include these in your bid. (i.e. Every 2 weeks or .48" of rain or higher)
2. Water Quality tests downstream (Clean Water is the bench mark)
3. Specify solutions per project. If it is a 3 month project with 6 rounds of maintenance: the 1 event solutions will be phased out after needing to purchase 6 rounds of those short term solutions.
4. Set performance standards that are in par with advancements in these arenas. (i.e. if flow rates can be substantially higher, & capture rates increase: shouldn't the floor be risen for acceptable solutions?!?)
