Overcoming the CPA Exam: A Journey of Determination and Discipline

Overcoming the CPA Exam: A Journey of Determination and Discipline

Starting the Journey: A Change of Mindset

At 21, fresh out of college with an accounting Bachelor's degree and at the onset of my career at KSDT, I embarked on the CPA exam journey. However, my approach was half-hearted and without true motivation. I managed to pass some sections but failed others. This initial attempt was more a matter of going through the motions rather than a purpose-driven effort. At that stage of my life, free from significant personal commitments, it was a golden opportunity that I unfortunately let slip by. No Mortgage, No Wife, No kids...What was I thinking?

A Turning Point: Renewed Determination

Seven years later, as a husband and father of two very little girls, an overnight shift in my mindset occurred. I realized that, yes, I might miss out on some precious moments with my family, but I had to set a bold goal: nail those CPA exams in six months, tops. Making this choice, with all the extra family stuff on my plate, kicked off a seriously intense journey.

The Path of Discipline: Embracing the Challenge

Passing the CPA exam was tough. I needed to be really determined and have a smart plan for each part of the test. It was like a tough journey where I had to keep going with a strong will and use a good strategy to pass each section of the exam.

Conquering REG

The first success came with the Regulations (REG) exam. My professional background in this area made this section relatively straightforward as I was able to pass this exam within 10 days of studying. However, this was just the beginning.

The Hurdle of AUD

The Audit (AUD) section presented a significant challenge. Scoring a near-pass at 74 was a setback after 2.5 weeks of studying, but it didn't break my spirit, it actually got me even more motivated as I was so close. I promptly retook the AUD exam just 20 days later, amidst my preparation for the Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) section.

Juggling BEC and AUD

The decision to tackle the AUD and BEC sections close together was a calculated move. I started hitting the books for BEC even before I got my AUD results back, juggling two major sections at the same time. It was a bit of a tightrope walk, but hey, it worked out! I ended up passing both exams, just five days apart.

The Final Obstacle: FAR

The Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) exam was the toughest for me at least. My initial failure with a score of 70 was disheartening after 3.5 weeks of studying, but I doubled down, extending my study period by another two weeks. This extra effort culminated in a passing score, marking the end of my CPA exam journey in an intense 4.5-month period.

A Rigorous Routine: Sacrifices and Discipline

Achieving this rapid success involved a strict daily routine. Weekday mornings began at 4 AM, dedicating 3-4 hours of study in the office before my day job. Weekends were even more intensive, with 7-8 hour study sessions at the office. This unwavering commitment meant sacrificing many family events, but the end goal always remained in sight. Never giving up on this one. Not this time. Not like when I was 21. This time I had so much more to lose.

The Importance of Timing

Seizing the Ideal Moment

Reflecting on my journey, the timing of when one takes the CPA exam is crucial. At 21, I was in the prime stage to tackle this challenge: fewer personal commitments and a fresh academic mindset. This period often offers the best opportunity for focused and uninterrupted study.

The Challenge of Delay

Delaying the exam can introduce new challenges, as I experienced. Balancing family responsibilities and work demands while preparing for the CPA exam was an uphill battle. The pressures of adult life can significantly impact the time and energy available for studying.

A Word of Advice

For those just starting their careers, I strongly recommend taking the CPA exam as early as possible. The flexibility and fewer life responsibilities you likely have at this stage are invaluable assets. Plus, it makes climbing the corporate ladder much easier. But, if you're in a situation like I was, needing to tackle the exam later in life, don't lose hope. Remember my story: with determination and discipline, it's absolutely possible to conquer the CPA exam, no matter where you are in your life's journey. Just like I did, you can turn the challenge into a remarkable success and a much sweeter one. No doubt taking it with all these adulthood challenges make this journey a much sweeter one.

Three Key Tips for CPA Exam Success

  1. Mindset: Shift your mindset and adopt the mentality that, no matter what, you are going to get this done.
  2. Discipline: Maintain a consistent and focused study routine.
  3. Timing: Aim for early career completion, but know it's never too late.

A Message of Hope and Assistance

For those aiming to conquer the CPA exam or any other professional exam, remember that while the path may be challenging, it is achievable. Your journey may differ, but with the right mindset and discipline, success will come your way. If you need guidance or tips, I am here to share my experience and support your goals.
