Overthinking: A Barrier to Taking Action and Achieving Goals

Have you ever found yourself stuck in a cycle of constantly thinking about a decision or task, but never actually taking any action on it?

Last week, I was part of a discussion with a group of Executives and Business Owners covering a range of topics. Over the last few days, i’ve been reflecting on the conversation and one of my observations was that a lot of the group were overthinking things which was preventing them making any progress on whatever their specific challenges were.

Overthinking is a common problem that many of us face, and it can have a significant impact on our ability to take action and achieve our goals.

The Negative Effects of Overthinking

  1. Decreased productivity - When we spend too much time thinking about a task instead of actually doing it, we end up wasting valuable time that could be better spent on other tasks. This can lead to decreased productivity and a feeling of being overwhelmed.
  2. Increased stress - Overthinking can increase our levels of stress and anxiety, making it harder to stay calm and focused. This can make it even harder to take action and make progress towards our goals.
  3. Decreased confidence - When we constantly doubt ourselves and our ability to make decisions, our confidence can take a hit. This can make us feel less capable and less motivated to take action.
  4. Missed opportunities - By spending too much time thinking about a decision or task, we risk missing out on opportunities that may come our way. This can hold us back from reaching our full potential and achieving our goals.

How to Overcome Overthinking

Overthinking is a habit that can be broken. Here are some strategies to overcome overthinking and take action:

  1. Practice mindfulness - Mindfulness is a practice that involves being present in the moment and focusing on your thoughts and emotions. By practicing mindfulness, you can become more aware of when you are overthinking and make a conscious effort to redirect your thoughts towards taking action.
  2. Set small, achievable goals - Rather than trying to tackle a big project or decision all at once, break it down into smaller, achievable goals. This will make it easier to take action and make progress, and can help build your confidence.
  3. Challenge negative thoughts - When you find yourself overthinking, challenge the negative thoughts that are holding you back. Ask yourself if they are based in reality or if they are just your fears and doubts. By reframing your thoughts, you can gain a new perspective and become more motivated to take action.
  4. Focus on what you can control - Overthinking often involves worrying about things that are outside of our control. Instead, focus on what you can control and take action on those things. This can help you feel more empowered and motivated to make progress.
  5. Take action - The best way to overcome overthinking is to take action. Start small, but start. Taking action can help you build momentum and overcome the fear and anxiety that can hold you back.

How does this affect leadership?

Whether it is coaching someone that you lead or making tough decisions, the act of taking action can often build the momentum to overcoming a problem or making progress on something.

Taking the action of getting started and adopting a continuous improvement approach is typically far more effective than waiting for perfection.
