Oxagon: Empowering innovators to shape the future of technology
Through its R&I ecosystem and accelerator programs, Oxagon is enabling global pioneers like Aitonomi Group to pilot technological innovations in complex operational environments.
Oxagon, NEOM’s reimagined industrial city, is leading the charge in technological advancements through its dynamic Research & Innovation (R&I) ecosystem.
Bringing together a diverse community of forward-thinking innovators, the ecosystem fosters collaboration and cross-industry insights, enabling transformative ideas to thrive and driving impactful innovation among Oxagon’s stakeholders.
A cornerstone of this effort is the Oxagon x McLaren Accelerator. Developed in partnership with McLaren Accelerator, this program equips innovative companies like Aitonomi, a German pioneer in autonomous transport, with the resources and real-world testing opportunities needed to refine and scale their technologies.
By providing unrivaled access to Oxagon’s R&I ecosystem, the accelerator serves as a launchpad for companies such as Aitonomi to scale their operations and commercialize their innovations, with a view to expand into key markets across the MENA region.
As part of the accelerator’s 2023 Cohort, Aitonomi, with support from the NEOM Innovation team, is piloting its autonomous vehicle technology at Port of NEOM, leveraging its expertise in self-driving solutions to explore opportunities in logistics and transport systems.
About Aitonomi
Founded by tech innovators Torsten Scholl and Xenia Scholl, backed by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners CCEP Ventures, Aitonomi is rapidly expanding its technologies to drive the future of sustainable, automated logistics solutions and smart roads.
At the core of its offerings is the AutoPilot software, which enables fully autonomous operations (SAE Level 4-5) across diverse environments. This technology is complemented by advanced features such as autonomous trailer coupling, automated charging, automated communication to traffic lights and a fleet management software. These capabilities enable Aitonomi’s vehicles to navigate complex urban and industrial settings, including ports and warehouses, with precision and efficiency.
The company’s latest innovation is a fully autonomous electric truck, tailored for advanced logistics applications. With the ability to transport goods weighing up to 55 tons, Aitonomi autonomous trucks are optimized for transport automation of containers and pallets, addressing critical challenges in modern supply chains.
Participation in the Oxagon x McLaren Accelerator has provided Aitonomi with strategic insights and connections, positioning the company for sustained growth in Saudi Arabia and the broader MENA region
Oxagon pilots highlight the potential of autonomous transportation
Aitonomi’s pilot project in Oxagon involves deploying its self-driving electric trucks at Port of NEOM, with the support of the NEOM Innovation team, to test their suitability for transporting containers throughout the port.
Equipped with advanced safety-certified technologies, these vehicles are being trialed to assess their seamless integration with cranes, terminal systems, and traffic lights, ensuring smooth operations within the port environment. The pilot provides valuable insights for our team on the implications of applying autonomous driving technology, while enabling Aitonomi to explore potential integration into container handling operations under the region’s unique conditions. The trial also aims to evaluate how automated vehicles can optimize transport routes and reduce turnaround times, enhancing overall port efficiency.
As a key logistics hub in the region, Port of NEOM is committed to adopting innovative solutions to improve operational performance while aligning with sustainability goals. Aitonomi’s self-driving electric trucks contribute to this exploratory process, highlighting Oxagon and Port of NEOM’s dedication to using cutting-edge technologies for more efficient and sustainable logistics.
Accelerator involvement drives Aitonomi’s growth plans
Aitonomi credits the Oxagon x McLaren Accelerator as a key driver of its regional expansion, providing valuable insights and connections to key institutions and partners in Saudi Arabia.
With Oxagon’s support, Aitonomi secured access to the National Technology Development Program (NTDP) incentives, accelerating its establishment and growth within the Kingdom’s evolving innovation ecosystem. This access has provided critical support and operational advantages as Aitonomi positions itself for sustained success in the region.
Additionally, through the pioneering RDI International Attraction Program, a collaboration between the Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDIA) and the Ministry of Investment in Saudi Arbia (MISA), Aitonomi has leveraged a seamless soft-landing process at the RDIA Innovation Tower. This program has provided the company with strategic support, connections, and access to critical resources, enabling them to pilot their cutting-edge autonomous transport technologies, establish a local presence, and drive innovation aligned with the Kingdom's sustainability and industrial advancement goals.
Building on this momentum, the company has set up a permanent local presence with the launch of Aitonomi Saudi Arabia LLC.
Plans are now underway to develop a state-of-the-art manufacturing and R&D facility in the Kingdom. This hub will advance next-generation technologies, including quantum-enhanced innovations, automated pantograph charging systems, and solar-powered solutions. The facility will directly support Saudi Arabia's sustainability goals while unlocking new commercial opportunities across the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Japan.
Aitonomi’s successful entry into Saudi Arabia highlights the collective efforts of Oxagon, NEOM Innovation, RDIA, and MISA in fostering technological innovation and advancing a cleaner, more sustainable industrial future for the Kingdom and beyond.
