The Pan American Health Organization Today
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO). Today, PAHO works to improve the health and well-being of the people of the Americas by providing leadership and technical cooperation on health issues.
In addition to its headquarters in Washington, D.C., PAHO has country and territory offices throughout the region. PAHO also works with other WHO regional offices and international partners to strengthen health systems and promote health in all sectors of society.
PAHO's main functions include:
- Providing technical cooperation and advice on health issues to countries and territories
- Supporting countries in their efforts to improve their health systems
- Collecting, analyzing, and sharing information on health trends
- Conducting research on health issues
- advocating for better health for all people in the Americas.
PAHO is governed by the Directing Council, which meets every two years, and the Executive Committee, which meets annually. PAHO's Member States are its main source of financial support. PAHO also receives voluntary contributions from governments, intergovernmental organizations, foundations, and the private sector.
