Parallels of Success: What Elite NBA Players and Top Business Leaders Share
I normally don’t watch the NBA playoffs, but this year I did because I am from Indiana born and raised so many young, up-and-coming NBA stars. I watched the Pacers play against Boston and saw how Boston swept them in four games.
About 80% of the time, it takes a player over six years to win an NBA Championship. They need this time to get mentally prepared and gain the necessary experience. Teams like the Pacers, typically don't play deep into the playoffs, so their bodies and minds aren’t accustomed to the extended physical and mental demands.
Take Michael Jordan, for example. It took him eight years to win a championship. To get there, he had to overcome significant mental hurdles, particularly when it came to beating Detroit. He had to get over that mental hump.
The same principle applies to business. The first thing you need is a coach who has been there and done that, or the players must adapt to the coach’s style. MJ had Phil Jackson, the Zen Master, who challenged him and the team to be the best. Similarly, business owners need a coach who has achieved significant success and can guide them to excellence.
Did you know that 95% of businesses don’t make a million dollars in annual revenue? To break this barrier, they need to be mentally and physically prepared to create change, much like the Pacers. The winning formula for success is having the right coach—someone who will raise your standards and turn your "shoulds" into "musts." You need someone who has won and knows how to lead a team, like Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, or Gregg Popovich.
I’ve had the honor of working with the Titans of business, like the late Chet Holmes, Anthony Robbins, and Jay Abraham—all of whom were featured in Business Mastery. From these associations, I developed a proven system called Neuro Business Conditioning, which integrates my 37 years of experience in clinical psychology and sports performance with the insights I gained from these business giants

Watching the NBA playoffs this year reminded me of coaching companies. In the NBA, players must be mentally and physically strong and work on every aspect of their game to win. Similarly, businesses must focus on every area to excel: sales, marketing, systems, management, operations, culture, workplace behavior, and monetizing the business.
I challenge business owners to win their own NBA championship. For some, this might mean reaching a million dollars in annual revenue; for others, ten million, or perhaps even a billion. Whatever your goal, I challenge you to find the right coach to lead your company to the promised land.
