A path to greener futures: BrightNight Starfire Renewable Energy Center to re-establish Kentucky as U.S. energy leader, deliver clean power to Rivian
We recently announced a trailblazing endeavor that marks a significant milestone in our mission to lead the clean energy transition–the BrightNight Starfire Renewable Energy Center. Sited for construction on top of the former Starfire Coal Mine, this visionary project will be the largest renewable power project in Kentucky and one of the largest in the nation to be built on former mine lands.
The Starfire Renewable Energy Center’s 800-megawatt (MW) capacity will produce enough electricity to power over 170,000 households per year, and the construction of a twenty-mile transmission line will enable an additional 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable power generation to be built in the region in the future. This one-billion-dollar project, the latest in our 2-gigawatt Kentucky portfolio, continues our significant investment in renewable power in the state and serves as a model for how we can reuse former coal mine sites to create new, clean energy generation facilities that drive economic growth and revitalize local communities.
A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future
As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, so does the imperative to transition to renewable energy sources that minimize our carbon footprint and combat climate change. The BrightNight Starfire Renewable Energy Center demonstrates our unwavering dedication to this cause as we harness the power of renewable energy to pave the way toward a more sustainable tomorrow.
We share this vision with partners Rivian Automotive and The Nature Conservancy. Rivian, who has agreed to purchase the first 100 megawatts generated by the Starfire Project, collaborated with The Nature Conservancy to select a clean energy opportunity that accelerates an equitable, science-based clean energy transition and maximizes positive impacts on climate, conservation, and communities, known as the “3Cs.” As a result of that vigorous research and vetting process, BrightNight emerged as the chosen developer to partner with Rivian.
Endorsement from The Nature Conservancy and the Government of the Commonwealth of Kentucky
We are honored to receive endorsements for the BrightNight Starfire Renewable Energy Center from The Nature Conservancy and the government of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. These endorsements emphasize the transformative impact of this project on both local communities and the broader ecological landscape.
Senator Bill Frist, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader and Chair of The Nature Conservancy’s Global Board, uses the Starfire project as an example of smart clean energy transformation in his recent article for Forbes, in which he highlights the urgency and significance of this transition, emphasizing that we have a singular opportunity to build a cleaner electric grid.
