Pathways to Build Sustainable Business Culture

Introduction
“Building a safe, equitable, sustainable world requires that we recognize the fundamental alignment of a healthy environment, healthy economy, and healthy society.” - John Sterman Co-founder, MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative.
The concept of sustainability has become very vital for businesses to survive in the future. Creating a sustainable environment benefits not only the environment but also encourages social responsibility and ethical decision making. Our country has the highest population in the world, it is widely understood that India will play a leading role in determining the relative success or failure of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).[1] India is the 5th largest economy today. By 2027-28, it will be the third-largest economy in the world, whereby implementing sustainable practices will be a crucial requisite.[2]
Why businesses fail to build Sustainable Business Culture?
Research states that companies are simultaneously adopting measures to work on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues which is difficult to implement at the same time. Most businesses do not possess a shared sense on sustainability internally and accordingly, they fail to achieve these goals. Many businesses have a goal to shift their non – sustainable business culture to a sustainable business culture without planning an effective realistic strategy which is why are unable to deliver their output. Most of the businesses initiate sustainable business practices due to regulatory and reputational risks.[3]
Programs conducted on sustainability by the businesses are not in line with the business objectives and hence not achieved. They do not influence the decision making and company management. They tend to focus on sustainability impacts at operational level rather than at a strategic level.[4]
Pathways to build a Sustainable Business Culture
Building a sustainability culture is hard work that begins with adopting a common language and understanding of sustainability goals.[5] Every business is launched for profit. Running programs like Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), ESG, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) campaigns is just another thing for the employees. The board of the companies should involve their employees in decision making to inculcate sustainable business practices in their organisation. Companies should collaborate with their employees, stakeholders, supply chain partners, NGOs and other external collaboration to build sustainability into the culture. The management of the company should create a sense of ownership with the parties they are collaborating which in turn results to accomplishing not only the objectives of the company but also its vision and mission. The company should be flexible and give the autonomy to the employees, stakeholders, supply chain partners, NGOs and other external collaboration to put forward new ideas, including innovations necessary to address societal and environmental issues.[6]
The younger generation is taking a keen interest in businesses which are focusing on sustainable business practices. Companies who have adapted sustainable business practices gain competitive advantage in the business community and these businesses sustain through the changing needs of the community and are appealing for investors.
Sustainability should be integrated into the main business by operationalizing it. Beyond setting long-term targets, this includes looking at how all aspects of the company – product/service creation, innovation, supply chain and delivery can be operated more sustainably on a day to day basis. The sustainability goals should be set for the business rather than for ESG investors. When the business is functioning in a sustainable manner, the investors will be automatically attracted.[7]
The businesses should communicate and develop a partnership with NGOs that have the resources and experience, which is necessary to help the businesses get their efforts off the ground. The business should involve volunteer time off (VTO) where employees are encouraged to volunteer at local charities or for causes, they are passionate about. It will be beneficial even if one or two days of VTO per year are arranged.[8]
In India, the Mahindra Group has aligned its vision with sustainable business practices by manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs). The Tata Group has been actively implementing Circular Economy principles through their “closing the loop” initiatives for resource efficiency such as sustainable packaging, producing fertilizers through waste and unlocking the value of their industrial by-products such as fly ash, road construction, while the Reliance industries have started their own waste management to tackle plastic waste by supplying it for road construction and many other companies have taken an initiative to implement sustainable business practices. Conclusion
A sustainable business culture is a pathway to long term success, resilience and positive impact. By focusing on strategic business issues, companies can learn the gravity of these issues that are keeping them from achieving SDGs. By integrating sustainability into core values, engaging stakeholders, empowering employees, collaborating with supply chain partners, measuring impact, fostering continuous improvement and embracing external collaboration, businesses can build culture that embeds sustainability in every aspect of their operations.
The sustainability culture will exist when people will behave in ways that will support it. Even with the risk of recession, governments, employees, consumers, and investors continue to put pressure on corporations to operate more ethically and sustainably to sustain the business model in the future.[11] Embracing sustainability is not only a responsibility but also an opportunity to thrive in a world where sustainable practices are becoming increasingly essential.
