The Patience of a Teacher: What I've Learned Working with Adults in Mexico

As a teacher, patience is one of the most important qualities to possess. This has been especially true for me in the past two years while working with adults in Mexico through Learn Laugh Speak.

During this time, I have had to hone my skills as an educator and understand what it takes to make progress with my students. It has been a difficult journey, but one that has been filled with invaluable lessons.

In this article, I will discuss the importance of patience when teaching adults and the insights I have gained during my time in Mexico.

The challenges of teaching adults

Teaching adults presents a unique set of challenges that educators must take into consideration. Adults often have different expectations and motivations than younger students, and they bring a variety of life experiences to the classroom.

Many adult learners have also been out of school for a long time and may be intimidated by the idea of returning to school.

In addition, adult learners often juggle busy lives with work and family commitments. Educators must be patient and understanding when dealing with adult learners who may be struggling to find the time and energy to devote to their education. It is important to provide a flexible learning environment that allows adult learners to progress at their own pace.

Finally, adult learners may have difficulties adjusting to new technology or unfamiliar teaching methods. Educators should be prepared to take the time to explain and demonstrate new concepts in a way that makes them accessible for adult learners.

It is essential for educators to stay up-to-date on the latest technologies and pedagogies so that they can provide a stimulating and engaging learning experience for their adult students.

The rewards of teaching adults

For me, the greatest reward of teaching adults is seeing them gain confidence in their ability to learn. I love seeing the excitement when they realize that they are making progress and can actually understand the concepts they are learning.

As an educator, I find it immensely rewarding when an adult student gets a compliment from their manager or peers about the progress they have made.

In my experience, it usually takes 2-3 weeks for adult students to start to see results and get excited about their progress. This is when the real drive and motivation starts to take hold, and it’s incredibly fulfilling to witness this transformation.

For many of my students, this is the first time they’ve been able to really enjoy learning since childhood, and it’s inspiring to be part of this journey with them.

At Learn Laugh Speak, we believe that everyone has a love of learning, and it’s just a matter of providing the guidance and resources for them to reignite that passion.

The rewards of teaching adults come in many forms, but for me, the most meaningful ones are seeing my students’ progress, watching their confidence grow, and hearing how their newfound skills have helped them in their professional lives.

The importance of patience

Patience is a key ingredient when working with adults in Mexico who are learning English. It is important to understand that, while some students may be highly motivated to learn, others may take longer to get to grips with the language.

As educators, we must accept that there will be days of slower progress and moments of frustration on both sides.

The challenge of teaching adults requires patience. We need to be patient with students, allowing them to make mistakes and learn from them. We also need to be patient with ourselves as we continue to adapt our teaching methods and approaches to ensure maximum progress.

Patience allows us to create a safe learning environment where students can try new things without feeling intimidated or judged.

Above all, patience helps create trust between the teacher and the student. As trust develops, the student becomes more confident and is more willing to take risks. This creates a productive environment for learning and encourages students to work hard and keep trying.

Patience is a difficult skill to master and it takes practice, but it is worth the effort in the end. With patience, we can create a positive learning experience for our students and encourage them to reach their full potential.
