Paw-Sitive Healing: How Domestic Violence Survivors are Finding Joy Through Pet Therapy
In the 2024, “Winning Every Wednesday” series, “Shalisa’s Sisters” is celebrating the lives of all Women over 50! My mission is to provide female survivors of Domestic Violence with uplifting, empowering, transformative resources, and guidance to enrich their lives. I see you, Sister!... You’re Beautiful, You’re Important and the Wisdom you have is Valued! Thank you.
Surviving Domestic Violence is daunting however, recovery is possible by making a concerted effort to rebuild, renew and revive your life! Healing comes in many forms including our furry friends. Growing up, I was always surrounded by cats and kittens, and they gave my such joy, even from the rambunctious ones. Cats really do have a mind of their own and when they want you to pet them, they’ll dart in between your legs or sit on your head as you’re sleeping and maybe nuzzle up to you as you’re reading a book. I love it when they purr and sound like a low humming refrigerator.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve developed a great love for small dogs which I affectionately refer to as “purse dogs” I could see myself one day being the pet-parent of both a cat and a dog! Though it’s been over a decade since I survived Domestic Violence, I still experience PTSD symptoms; loud noises, random people yelling or even an object falling to ground can sometimes make me jolt. However, whenever I see a cat, dog or other cute pet I instantly smile and feel-good inside, do you do the same?
According to a Psychology Today article, “people with pets made social connections with strangers out in public and were more likely to have positive interactions with family and friends.” Now, let’s explore what other researchers say about the benefits of pet therapy, We'll also uncover some surprising statistics and fun facts along the way!
The Power of Pet Therapy:
Pet therapy isn’t just about cuddles—though those are a big part of it. Research shows that animals can significantly boost mental health and emotional well-being. According to the American Heart Association, pet ownership can reduce heart disease risk and lower blood pressure.
A Furry Friend's Impact:
In a 2021 study by the Journal of Psychiatric Research found that pet therapy can reduce symptoms of PTSD and Anxiety by up to 60% in some cases. For women overcoming Domestic Violence, pets offer unconditional support and a non-judgmental presence that can be incredibly soothing. Plus, the bond with a pet can enhance self-esteem and promote a sense of purpose.
Fun Facts About our Furry Friends:
Did you know that petting a dog or cat can increase the production of Serotonin and Dopamine in the brain? These are the chemicals that make us feel happy and relaxed!
Cats have also been known to purr at a frequency of 25 to 150 Hertz, which is the same frequency range that promotes healing in bones and tissues! So, when a cat purrs near you, it’s not just cute—it’s also therapeutic, wow! who knew.
Dogs can reduce stress and anxiety levels. A 2019 study showed that interacting with dogs can lower Cortisol levels by up to 50%- Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone that your adrenal glands produce and release; high levels of this hormone have a negative impact on the human body. I can’t believe dogs can actually reduce stress! can you? Community and Connection:
Pet therapy also helps in creating a sense of community. Organizations like Pet Partners and the American Humane Association offer therapy animal programs that connect survivors with trained therapy animals. This not only provides emotional support but also helps women engage with others in a positive, supportive environment.
Dogs can also aide Survivors with connecting to non-survivors think about this, when you take your dog for a walk, they help you connect with other dog owners, so your dog is actually your wing-dog helping you to make new connections with people and giving you a chance to socialize. You never know, your dog may even help you make a love connection with a new loving partner; as long as your pet likes the person then maybe that’s a good sign to take a chance on love (use all precautionary measures to vet the person) If you can’t commit to being a full-time pet parent, consider volunteering at a no-kill pet shelter or become a paid dog walker or cat sitter. Remember, there are other pets to love; horses, turtles, guinea pigs and the list goes on, just find the pet that’s right for you.
Survivors of Domestic Violence are empowered to choose the type of pet therapy you want; being a pet owner or pet volunteer isn’t just a feel-good trend—it’s a lifeline. With the support of furry friends, survivors are finding new ways to heal, laugh, and reclaim their lives. So, whether it's through a wagging tail, comforting purr or another positive pet interaction; pets are proving that sometimes the best medicine comes with fur and whiskers. I hope you find and enjoy your new fur baby!
