Penny Power Ponders - The Courage to Be ‘In the Arena’
This week, I've been reflecting on the courage required to create change, big or small. Each of us strives to leave a mark on the world, a testament to our contribution and inherent need to make a difference. This isn’t about ego; it’s about fulfilling our purpose through service to others, enhancing our lives beyond just making a living.
Theodore Roosevelt’s famous quote serves as a brilliant reminder of the virtues we need when stepping into the arena of life and leadership:
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, comes short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly..."

In 1998, when Thomas and I were pioneering the concept of online business friendships, we embodied these virtues. Another Roosevelt saying, “There are no statues to the critics,” has profoundly influenced me. It underscores the value of action over criticism. History honours those who act and contribute constructively, not those who merely critique.
For me, promoting ‘love in business’ was challenging, especially starting in the tough climates of women seriously entering the business world in the 1980s and '90s. There was a reason women wore shoulder pads back then! Today, 40 years later, this ethos is needed more than ever. As my mother taught me, “I have never dropped my standards to those of others.”
This week, consider the message you feel compelled to share. Find the courage to express why you care so deeply about your purpose, ensuring your words uplift rather than harm.
