People of EDC - Sebastian Ng

Welcome to People of EDC, a series dedicated to celebrating the diverse experiences of our workforce by getting to know them on a more personal level. This week’s article features Sebastian Ng, EDC´s Senior Relationship Manager, Mid-Market Business.

For Sebastian, the past couple of years has brought a number of changes, including a move of country, a career break, and then transitioning into a new career journey.

Prior to joining EDC in 2023, Sebastian had a fulfilling career as a seasoned corporate banker with 25+ years' experience in commercial and corporate banking, both in Singapore and Canada and is well versed in credit origination, underwriting, relationship management, credit risk management and business development in the mid-market and large-corporate segments across diversified industries.

While in Singapore as a corporate banker for large conglomerates for 13 years prior to his career break in 2021/2022, his coverage included the Indo-Pacific region where he played a pivotal role in driving strategic objectives. He also played a crucial role in building relationships with conglomerates across diverse economies including Indonesia, Hong Kong/China, Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, and Japan.

Upon retiring from his role, Sebastian, a single dad, decided to move to Vancouver BC with his teenage daughter. After spending a couple of years settling his daughter into a new school, new home and new environment, Sebastian decided it was time to look for meaningful work, and that's when he came across EDC.

“I never thought I would join a crown corporation. I thought I was going to be a banker for life. But EDC’s mandate resonated with me, and I decided to throw my name in the hat for the role.”

What attracted Sebastian to EDC was the opportunity to align his values with his work. It was a chance to move away from the conventional profit-centric approach to business to a clear mandate in helping Canadian exporters grow globally.

“It has been slightly over a year now working at EDC and I love it. I have been learning about EDC's work and organizational culture and the wider offerings of EDC as a whole and am humbled to be a part of this organization carrying out its mandate. I also have tremendous respect for our leadership team and the culture they each bring to EDC, and my outstanding colleagues within my immediate team here in Vancouver BC and MMB West, as well as colleagues within and outside of MMB across the globe such as the Indo-Pac team with whom I collaborate with are all truly amazing.” says Sebastian.

In addition to taking a hands-on approach at work, Sebastian (who considers himself a “homebody”) enjoys spending much of his free time taking the same approach at home- playing lead guitar covering mainly blues, rock and jazz and even serves on his church worship team), gardening and landscaping, and home projects in his workshop. He made an outdoor barn light from plumbing parts, a patio coffee table from scrap wood and the latest work-in-progress - a plank dining table from reclaimed barn wood!

Sebastian’s journey from Singapore to Canada is a story of adaptation and growth. With his hands-on work style and a commitment to staying grounded, he's a shining example of resilience and determination. As he settles into his new role, his story reminds us all to embrace change, diversity, and the excitement of stepping into the unknown.
