The Perfect Gift? Maybe You Don’t Need to Buy It!

The Perfect Gift? Maybe You Don’t Need to Buy It!

Perhaps you adore Christmas: the twinkling lights illuminating the city, jingles echoing everywhere, and warm hugs under a beautifully decorated tree. You savor the anticipation and magic of a moment that feels like pure enchantment.

Or maybe… you’re part of the community that can’t stand the holidays. The ones who, if they could, would fast-forward the calendar straight to January 7th, when Epiphany takes everything away—along with a collective sigh of relief.

Whatever your relationship with Christmas, one question, as punctual as a clock, arrives every year:

“What should I give this year?”

Yes, finding the perfect gift can seem like an impossible mission during the holidays. And it seems so easy to get it wrong…

“Between 60% and 70% of people make mistakes when buying Christmas gifts,” says Cathrine Jansson-Boyd, professor of consumer psychology at Anglia Ruskin University. “Looking at purchasing patterns, most people leave everything until the last minute, which shows they have no idea what to buy.”1

The Must-Have Holiday Gifts According to Influencers (and More!)

Social media is bursting with gift guides and recommendations: scented candles, skincare sets, tech gadgets… The list is endless. And lately, thanks to influencers, it’s incredibly detailed, complete with dos and don’ts.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Personalize Everything! Personalized gifts are always a hit. A mug with a photo, a book with a heartfelt dedication, or a handmade item shows thoughtfulness and care.
  • Think About Their Interests. What’s the passion of the person you’re shopping for? A book for the avid reader, a board game for the tabletop enthusiast, or a cooking class for the foodie.
  • Give an Experience. Sometimes, an experience is more valuable than an object: a weekend in a cultural city, a dance class, or a concert featuring their favorite artist creates lasting memories.
  • Don’t Forget the Packaging. Presentation matters! A lovingly wrapped gift makes it even more special.

Gifts to Avoid

Expert guides often also warn us about what to steer clear of. Here are the top three:

  1. Gifts That Create More Problems. Anything requiring decisions, like an unbooked vacation package—many people find choosing more stressful than enjoyable. Anything that might never get used or, worse, makes the recipient uncomfortable, like a gym membership that might suggest they need to get in shape.
  2. Overly Personal Decorative Items, such as paintings, sculptures, or ornaments, might not suit their taste or their home.
  3. Generic Beauty Products. Perfumes and creams are not only very personal but can also seem thoughtless if chosen generically.

The EFT Guide to the Perfect Gift

The best gifts come from the heart.

In a fast-paced world where ads constantly scream, “Buy more! Spend more!” it’s easy to get caught up in the pressure to find a material gift that impresses. But pause. Breathe. Reflect.

The most beautiful gift isn’t the one with the highest price tag or the fanciest wrapping. The perfect gift isn’t found on store shelves. It’s the one that comes from the heart.

Christmas is a doorway to a special time—a chance to truly connect with the people we love. And what better way to do so than by giving something that expresses what we often forget to say?

Love: The Most Precious Gift

But if we trace it back to the source, we must ask: What shapes the way we experience love?

It depends on what we believe love to be.

  • How many people still see attachment as a limitation?
  • How many think dependence is a flaw?
  • How many, even today, are unaware of love’s healing power?

We live in a world obsessed with the idea of a separate, independent self. The ideal of self-sufficiency drives us to deny our vulnerability, to hide the most human need of all: the need to love and be loved.

What if we changed our perspective?

A World Transformed by Love

Imagine a world where more people embraced the kind of love that Emotionally Focused Therapy teaches us:

  • A love that is connection.
  • A love that is a safe haven where we can be our true selves.
  • A love that welcomes, supports, and heals.

Wouldn’t that be a better place for everyone?

If you think about it, the perfect gift this Christmas isn’t something material. It’s spreading love, bringing it to those who still don’t know what love truly is.

“To be human is to need others—this is never a mistake or a weakness.” – Sue Johnson

How many people remain unaware of love’s healing power?

Another question: How would the world change if more people embraced the Emotionally Focused Therapy approach?

Wouldn’t it be a better place for all of us?

How to Spread the Gift of Love

There are so many ways to do it, and none require a trip to the mall:

  • Share What You’ve Gained. If you’re part of the EFT family, you’ve already experienced the transformative power of love firsthand. Share it. Tell others about it. Give it away.
  • Gift a Book. Choose a book about love that explores the transformative power of connection and opens doors to new insights.
  • Speak Your Truth. If love, in its truest form, has changed you, share that experience. Tell others how it touched and transformed you.

Love as an Eternal Gift

In the spirit of EFT, the most meaningful gift is one that meets the emotional needs of those we love. Often, it’s not about grand gestures or extravagant surprises but about simple, authentic acts:

  • A handwritten letter expressing how much you value someone.
  • A day dedicated entirely to them, doing what they love most.
  • A moment of genuine listening, setting everything else aside to focus on what they want to share.

Giving love means choosing to be present, to say to another:

  • “I’m here for you.”
  • “You matter to me.”
  • “I’ll stand by you, even when life gets tough.”

A Gift That Never Ends

This year, choose to give something that doesn’t wear out, break, or go out of style. Give love. Spread love. Be part of the change.

The perfect gift isn’t something you can buy. It’s something you can give. It’s in your heart, your hands, your actions. This Christmas, choose to bring light into the lives of those you love.

Because the greatest gift we can give others—and ourselves—is remembering that love is always the answer.
