In Episode 24 of Series 5 of the Engaging Internal Comms podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Valerie Di Maria, a communications and marketing leader, executive coach, and co-founder of The Ten Company. We delved into the art of effective internal communication, focusing on how leaders can enhance their presentation skills to truly engage their audiences.

Here are the key takeaways from our conversation:

1. Presence: The First Impression

  • What It Is: Presence is about how leaders come across to their audience, including appearance, body language, tone of voice, and overall energy.
  • Why It Matters: It’s not just about looking good; it’s about engaging the audience and conveying credibility. Whether in person or on video, how leaders present themselves can significantly impact their message’s reception.

2. Presentation: Crafting the Message

  • What It Is: This is the messaging aspect of communication. It involves having well-structured content and knowing it inside out.
  • Why It Matters: Great content forms the backbone of any effective presentation. Leaders should focus on delivering their message clearly and confidently, avoiding over-reliance on notes.

3. Persuasion: Influencing Action

  • What It Is: Persuasion is about influencing the audience’s actions or thoughts.
  • Why It Matters: The goal of any presentation should be to drive the audience towards a specific action or mindset. Leaders need to be clear about what they want their audience to do as a result of their communication.

Key Principles for Effective Communication

Valerie shared three fundamental principles that can enhance communication effectiveness:

  1. Know Your Audience: Understand who they are, what they know, and what they want. Tailor your message accordingly.
  2. Have an Explicit Ask: Clearly articulate what you want from your audience at the beginning of your presentation.
  3. Create a Dialogue: Engage your audience in a two-way conversation. Encourage interaction throughout the presentation.

Practical Tips for Implementation

  • Start with the Ask: Begin your presentation by stating your main request or objective.
  • Use a Structured Approach: Organise your presentation around three key messages.
  • Encourage Questions: Come prepared with specific questions to prompt discussion.
  • Be Flexible: Adapt your presentation based on audience feedback and questions.

Embracing Interaction and AI

Valerie and I also discussed the importance of embracing interaction during presentations and the role of AI in communication strategies. Valerie introduced a new AI workshop designed to help communications teams and business leaders leverage AI effectively to enhance productivity and creativity.

Final Thoughts

By understanding their audience, making explicit asks, and fostering dialogue, leaders can significantly enhance their communication skills and drive better engagement within their organisations.

I hope you find these insights as valuable as I did. Don’t forget to listen to the full episode for a deeper dive into these topics. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback.
