A Personal Journey- Towards Sales!!

Sales is often a blend of excitement and challenge. It started for me with a wonderful feeling and a lot of dreams for growth. In the first four months, things went well as I began to understand the sales process.

So, what is sales? At its core, sales is about communication, confidence, and building relationships. It involves sending emails, making lots of calls, connecting with partners, and following up with potential customers. Knowledge about what you’re offering is also crucial. These are the elements within a salesperson’s control.

However, there are many factors beyond a salesperson’s influence that affect success. For instance, customer interest plays a significant role. Often, customers will express their needs, but then delay their decisions. You document everything and follow up according to their timelines, but sometimes they stop responding altogether. This raises a big question: what can a salesperson do when a customer isn’t engaging? How do you encourage someone to make a purchase when they aren’t answering calls?

Another challenge is that partners might close deals without your knowledge, leaving you out of the loop. If you reach out to a partner for updates and they don’t provide accurate information, it can be frustrating.

In sales, employees are often pressured to make calls and reach out to new customers. While these metrics are important, they shouldn’t be the only measures of performance. Salespeople should not be judged solely on the number of calls made or how quickly they follow up, especially since customer procurement periods can vary greatly.

In my first job, I’ve started to feel a loss of motivation. Even in a large company, it seems that efforts don’t always lead to results. Ultimately, everything comes down to revenue, and it can feel disheartening.

However, it’s essential to remember that not being able to close a sale doesn’t reflect your intelligence or capabilities. Sales can be unpredictable, often depending on customer interest, which is difficult to gauge. Genuine opportunities can be rare, and many customers may simply postpone their purchasing decisions.

In summary, sales is a challenging but valuable field. It’s important to keep pushing forward and not to judge your worth based on immediate outcomes.
