Abstract:

This study delves into the perceptions and attitudes of college youths (PG students) in  Tamil Nadu regarding various facets of democracy. Through structured surveys, the study examines demographic profiles, voting behaviors, media consumption habits, knowledge of democratic principles, trust in institutions, and opinions on key democratic issues. The findings shed light on the complexities of youth engagement with democracy and highlight areas of concern that warrant attention for the sustenance and enhancement of democratic governance in India.

The demographic profile of the study sample reveals a gender distribution of 57% female and 43% male, reflecting the diversity of the population under investigation. Residential distribution shows that 45% reside in municipality premises, 52% in village premises, and 3% in corporation premises, underscoring the rural-urban dynamic in India's socio-political landscape.

Voting behavior emerges as a crucial aspect of democratic participation, with 65% of respondents casting their votes in the recent parliament election. However, a notable 35% abstained, citing reasons such as lack of interest (29%), being out of station (57%), and voter ID issues (14%). These findings highlight both the engagement and disenchantment of youth with the electoral process.

Media consumption patterns among youth reveal a preference for news channels, with 75% of respondents indicating regular engagement. However, a significant proportion (70%) does not read newspapers regularly, and 52% do not watch news channels, suggesting variations in media consumption habits among youth.

Knowledge of democratic principles is another crucial aspect examined in the study. A significant majority (85%) claim knowledge of freedom struggle movements in India, reflecting awareness of the country's historical democratic struggles. Furthermore, 82% indicate knowledge of the fundamental rights and duties of citizens, underscoring the importance of civic education in shaping democratic citizenship among youth.

Trust in political leaders and institutions emerges as a nuanced aspect, with 47% expressing very little trust. This finding underscores the need for efforts to enhance transparency, accountability, and integrity in political governance to restore trust among youth.

The study also explores youth perspectives on key democratic issues. While 73% believe democracy to be the best form of government in India, there are mixed views on other issues such as secularism, gender equality, and political corruption. These diverse perspectives underscore the complexity of youth attitudes towards democratic values and institutions.

Factors influencing youth participation in democratic activities range from personal beliefs (17%) to knowledge about political issues (23%) and time constraints (15%). Understanding these factors is crucial for designing targeted interventions to promote greater youth engagement in democratic processes.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the attitudes and behaviors of college youths towards Indian democracy. While youth demonstrate engagement with democratic processes, there are also areas of concern such as low trust in political institutions and perceptions of corruption. Addressing these concerns is essential for fostering a vibrant and inclusive democracy that reflects the aspirations of India's youth.
