The Phases of Waiting....

Good Day!

As we continue personal, professional, and business development, please allow me to identify another all-too-common malady, and depict another element of success:

The Phases of those causing and creating delay:

  • Phase One: Control – “It’s only been a couple days. I will take my time, do ‘how’ I want, and make them wait.”
  • Phase Two: Rationalization – “I am busy, I think I am busier than everyone else. Everyone should have to wait for me, anyways.”
  • Phase Three: Repetitive Checking In – “I will wait for them to check back with me again, several times. That should tell them I think I am busy, and for me to feel like I might eventually get to it.”
  • Phase Four: Self-Doubt – “Maybe I do not understand what they want. I do not know how to go about it, so I will not embarrass myself trying.”
  • Phase Five: Self-Loathing – “Why do they keep following up with me? Don’t they know I think I am busy?”
  • Phase Six: Anger – “They are making me look bad with their timely follow up and follow through. That ticks me off…”
  • Phase Seven: Vengeance Masked as Indifference – “Not that I care or anything, but I hope they suffer until I reply.”
  • Phase Eight: Platform Venting – Using Public Platforms to Vent in Mass and/or Anonymously, “When I do make time to reply, I will be critical of their original request and how they think, no matter how long it took me to reply.”

The Phases of those waiting for the aforementioned people (those people causing and creating delay because they do not follow up nor follow through, and do not communicate):

  • Phase One: Patience – “It’s been a couple days, yet no reply from them. I guess I can give them more time, again.”
  • Phase Two: The Unknown – “Maybe they are out sick or they think they are busy or they are stuck because they want to tell someone else ‘how’ to do it.”
  • Phase Three: Double-Checking – “Did you receive my email, package, request, question,…? We still need your answer.”
  • Phase Four: Self-Questioning – “Why do they not respect other people and their time?”
  • Phase Five: Reflecting – “Why do they not understand how they are holding up the company?”
  • Phase Six: Frustration – “Do they realize nobody likes the lack of answers, lack of respect, time waste, and nobody respects those behaviors in people?”
  • Phase Seven: Momentary Indifference – “Well, the entire company and all our people are suffering while they muddle.”
  • Phase Eight: Passion – The unrelenting commitment to succeed; always having a sense of urgency, timely follow up and follow through, doing WHAT is needed instead of waiting for others to come to you or chase you (the individual), maturing beyond the illusional and delusional control freak of “how”,….

If you are anywhere in the phases of those causing and creating delay, you are either lost due to self-absorption or, worse, acting with malice. Neither are acceptable nor beneficial to anyone, including you. Be honest with yourself and what you do every day, which is another way of self-reflecting upon your preference or comfort zone, also known as complacency. If you think you are comfortable being last or the person causing and creating delay, you are stuck or stalled. Worse, you are doing it to everyone with whom you interact, or are supposed to be interacting.
