Standing before the Bean's mirrored surface, Vallor noticed how it distorted and reflected the city and its people, much like how AI systems mirror human data and behavior with their own inherent biases. This observation became the foundation for her critique of artificial intelligence.

Unlike other AI analogies that suggest living intelligence, Vallor argues that AI is more like a mirror - flat and inert, yet captivating us with illusions of depth. While not anti-AI, Vallor advocates for careful implementation. As codirector of BRAID, she advises Silicon Valley on responsible AI development, supporting narrow, well-tested applications for health and environmental challenges. However, she expresses concern about our growing dependence on algorithms and AI companions.

Vallor emphasizes the importance of human virtues and values in guiding our relationship with technology. She argues that being virtuous isn't about who we are but what we do - a distinctly human quality that AI can only reflect, not truly understand.
