Photoshop Changed Everything
Should Designers Learn 3D?
Vikrant Singh puts it this way: "Mention Photoshop and everyone will know what you’re talking about. It’s even entered the common vernacular as a verb." This wasn’t always the case. Once, Adobe Photoshop was a very specialized software that only professionals knew how to use, and even then, not all of them could afford it.”
I remember learning Adobe software, most distinctly #Photoshop, in my early days of college. Digital media design technology was my major and although I was most interested in animation at first, I ended up pursuing graphic design as a career. After landing my first job as a very young IBM contractor, I was asked to help the HR team maintain their website by adding their events and help with registration. I learned the basics of HTML/CSS/JavaScript, but mostly I used Dreamweaver (now owned by Adobe) for these projects. I later worked more and more on vector art using Adobe #Illustrator - Which I still love and use regularly.
Above is an image of the 6.0 version of Photoshop. Seeing that image of Photoshop 6.0 brings back memories! No subscription needed. Ah, the good old days when software was on a CD and came in boxes you purchased from a store. This gives a new meaning to an off-the shelf solution. It definitely adds a nostalgic touch to the whole experience, doesn't it? It's amazing how graphics software accessibility has evolved since then, and now we can easily access software online with just a few clicks.
Amazing New Features
Adobe Photoshop just took a massive leap into the future with some mind-blowing AI features and enhancements. Brace yourself for a whole new level of easy to learn photo editing and image creation for everyone. One feature that has everyone buzzing is Generative Fill. It's like magic! With this tool, you can effortlessly add, extend, or remove content from images without damaging the original. All you need to do is give it a simple text prompt, and voila! You'll get realistic results that will blow your mind..well sorta. With the recent advancements in software development, especially in graphic design tools like Adobe Photoshop, it's natural to wonder if these #AI tools make your design skills irrelevant.
While AI has definitely brought some amazing capabilities to the table, it doesn't mean that everything you do can be easily duplicated by someone else by way of AI. Think of AI tools as just that - tools. They can assist you in creating complex designs more efficiently, but they won't replace your creativity and expertise. You still have the ability to bring a personal touch and originality to your work that sets you apart from others.
The Remove Tool Use is another game-changer. Say goodbye to distractions or unwanted areas in your photos. This intelligent technology intelligently identifies and removes them, leaving you with picture-perfect moments.
3D modeling takes things a step further by adding depth and realism to objects
I have worked in digital media for over 20 years and I see several similarities between graphic and 3D modeling software. When it comes to representing #3D objects and vector graphics, mathematics plays a big role. Both of these use mathematical equations to bring shapes to life.
I used Illustrator to create vector graphics use points, lines, and curves to create different shapes. These shapes can be easily scaled and manipulated without losing any quality. On the other hand, now I use SelfCAD to design 3D objects. These 3D designs are defined by vertices (points in space), edges (lines connecting the vertices), and faces (surfaces between the edges). This allows for a more realistic representation of objects with depth and volume.
So, while vector graphics are great for creating 2D images that can be scaled infinitely without losing clarity, 3D modeling takes things a step further by adding depth and realism to objects.
Graphic designers and animators have an incredible opportunity ahead. By embracing the movement of 3D art, you can take your career to new heights.
Who says 3D modeling has to be complicated? SelfCAD simplifies the process with our online 3D CAD web application that takes just a few days to master. Sketch, model, sculpt, and slice your 3D projects with our affordable, browser-based modeling software that is ideal for both professionals and hobbyists. With powerful and comprehensive 3D sketching and 3D modeling tools you can create new models, fix geometry, and slice models for print directly within the software without any need for additional downloads. SelfCAD is a great way to edit files from online 3D CAD repositories - just import over 20+ file types and use our intuitive editing tools directly on the mesh! You can also import your SelfCAD models directly into MyMiniFactory! Check out this tutorial on YouTube. According to the CEO of Convrse.ai, there has never been a better time to embrace 3D modeling as a career opportunity. The experts also say that with the rapid rise of immersive technologies like AR, VR, and MR, along with the emergence of Web 3 as a new frontier for digital interactions, and even talk about the metaverse becoming a reality.
Is 3D Modeling a Good Career?
With the upcoming demand, every industry will need 3D content to reach their consumers as the future of all digital interactions will be 3D and will have some version of a digital twin. "Imagine large 3D environments that are gamified by brands, you already might have heard of some of these activities. Keep an eye on emerging software that makes content creation in 3D easier than before, and you will be set for success. These software offer drag-and-drop functionalities, are on cloud and tackle larger challenges around creation, storage, rendering and transmission pipelines.”
My advice, don't turn down 3D design projects, learn the software.
