The Visional Group, whose mission is "Creating new possibilities one after another," will support professional soft tennis player Yuta Funamizu's challenge to the American professional league "Major League Pickleball (hereinafter referred to as MLP)."
Funamizu has decided to take on the challenge of the American professional league "MLP" and has decided to move to the United States in January 2024.
Pickleball is a rapidly growing popular sport in the United States that combines elements of tennis, table tennis, and badminton. The number of people playing sports in the United States will reach 8.9 million in 2022, an 85.7% increase from the previous year and a rapid increase of 158.6% in three years (*1), making it the fastest-growing sport in the United States for the third consecutive year. It has become a competition. Additionally, as of March 2023, it has been announced that nearly 50 million Americans have played pickleball in the past year (*2). On the other hand, Japan's competitive population is small and its existence is still not well known.
Funamizu became the world's number one tennis player as a university student, was a member of NTT West Japan, the world's number one corporate team, won 10 consecutive Japanese league titles, and later became an independent professional player and has been active in the soft tennis world for many years. Starting this month, Funamizu will travel to the United States and aim to become Japan's first MLP pickleball player, as well as the world's number one.
Visional, whose group mission is "New possibilities one after another," will support Mr. Funamizu's new possibilities as he takes on his first challenge in Japan.
[Comment from Yuta Funamizu]
Last year, I went to the United States for a trial run and had a practice match with professional players, and I was able to beat many players, and I felt that I could use the soft tennis experience and techniques I had cultivated over the years. I saw pickleball being enjoyed by so many people in the United States that it would destroy tennis courts on weekends, and I felt that it has become a part of the culture. Although it is not yet a major sport in Japan, it has become a great sport in people's lives. I decided that I wanted to give it a try. I want to discover new possibilities for myself by once again taking on the challenge of becoming the best in the world in both pickleball and soft tennis. I would be happy if I could deliver dreams to Japanese children by helping Japanese people become the best in the world on the world stage.
[Comment from Soichiro Minami, President and CEO of Visional Co., Ltd.]
Although he is active as a professional soft tennis player and has won the world championship, in recent years he has taken on the challenge of a new sport that is rapidly growing in the United States. The sight of Mr. Funamizu starting his challenge on the world stage with the aim of becoming the first Japanese MLP player coincided with our company's corporate philosophy of ``New Possibilities.'' A desire to create new breakthroughs through one's own actions, without being satisfied with where one is now. An attitude of continuing to change and learn towards a future that is unimaginable today. These are the values that Visional has cherished since its founding, and are also the DNA of the group. We hope that by supporting Mr. Funamizu's challenge, a new movement will be born in the Japanese sports world.
