The Pinocchio phenomenon or truth crushed by alternative facts

The 46th President of the United States was sworn in while our collective memory is trying to free itself from the madness of its predecessor.

But the facts are there. For four years we have witnessed the daily lying excesses of a mythomaniac, a fake news storyteller or a compulsive liar (1). However, his collection of pathologies, a competent scientific analyst will probably not fail to write the autopsy in the years to come, is not my purpose.

The deliberate adherence, without any questioning whatsoever, to a denounced and recognized lie never ceases to puzzle me. This behavior has a powerful trigger: the Pinocchio phenomenon (2). Its mechanism is frighteningly simple. And dangerous. It could be translated as

Why does our brain deliberately choose to plebiscite liars?

Because it is psychologically impossible for us to doubt everyone, because any conversation would be impossible if we had to verify the truthfulness of everything we are told, and because the vast majority (75%) of people consider themselves to be sincere, we all assume that others are telling the truth.

All the more so because in our daily lives, we don't have the ability to detect liars in action. It has been scientifically proven (3) that lies and truths blur when the sender is convinced and convincing.

Likewise it is a fact that we tend to believe the politicians we have already voted for. The feeling of loyalty grows stronger (4) while adherence to the principles defended by the candidate diminishes. The politician comes to count more than his politics. Don't hesitate to replace "politician" by friends, followers or subscribers and "politics" by post "liked", shared or commented on.

It is in this context that the impact of conspiracy theories comes into play. The relativity of truth has become a new reality: alternative facts (5) have taken precedence over proven facts.

One of my cardinal values is honesty. Whether intellectual (6), conceptual or moral. When I discover information that is so delirious that it becomes suspect, I am disturbed, surprised, appalled by the number of comments that praise or oppose it. Without ever questioning it.

And yet. The period is to conspiracy theories like the power of social networks is to rumors, a tsunami that nothing and no one can stop.

For me, one of the challenges of information is fact checking (7). Beware of the bias linked to our erroneous perception. Just because we believe we are rational and informed does not mean that our perception is not influenced by programmed patterns. These buried mechanisms that unconsciously take root and pollute our brains with shortcuts that no Panurge sheep (8) would deny.

It is physically unbearable for me to see the abuse of gullible people. And when the revelation of a lie does not repair the harm caused - a butterfly effect condemning us to the torments of a long time - only a feeling of sadness assails me.

But all shame drunk, I have a confession to make. I have already been guilty of lies. All the good excuses and all the bad reasons given won't change anything. I have sometimes softened my confession with a preamble dedicated to passing on the pill, words chosen with care. "I owe it to you to reveal what I have been hiding for too long" had no other meaning than "I have lied to you". More violent. Like the damage caused. Which I must assume. And repair.

Do I have a slate today where the balance between lies and revelations is absolutely balanced? I dare to believe it. Truly, I do.

Because if I don't, all what would remain for me would be the paradox of the liar (9). He who pronounces "I am lying" if he is telling the truth cannot tell the truth and if he is not telling the truth, cannot lie.

After all, it is not always clear who the Pinocchio is. 😉

NB: For those who might be surprised by the chosen visual, this is a photo dating from 2015 published on the Vanity Fair website (10). Far from the polemic of which it was a victim because of the little diversity represented by the American talk show hosts announced for the new season, this one represents those who were going - in the following months and during 4 years - to use their audience to denounce with humour or derision, seriously or in desperation, an incredible volume of fake news.

I have the deepest respect for those who, within their means, with the strength and energy they have, make the fruit of their indignation available to as many people as possible. Thank you very much: Stephen Colbert, Conan O'Brien, Trevor Noah, James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, Larry Wilmore, Jimmy Fallon, Bill Maher.
