Piss bowl Family - Work life balance

I coined this term about 6 years ago, namely for professionals who sell themselves to a job completely ignoring family. Their idea of work is not about using the mind faster, smarter or to get work done by collaborating. Instead they stretch work till they are seen in hallways lingering like apparitions in the dark. A self-coveted stamp called "last to go" is stamped.

If

anyone has that much work that the employee turn into a donkey the manager

needs to get reassessed. If work is so overwhelming then resource management is

poor, and again manager need to be assessed. If the excuse is that it is a

start-up culture then you can have people work insane hours few days in a month

- not make it a habit under any pretext. Again manager need to be assessed.

In

which parallel world is this a good thing ? In the world of managers from the

paleontology era of workplace norms. These guys still think employees are

laborers. The tough, savage one who worked longest and deepest in the mines was

loved by the mine owner....something as sick as that continues among a small %

who ruin climate of the overall workplace.

Such

laborers willingly stay back to impress their 'boss from the mines'. In the

process demand and compel the same insanity from responsible well balanced

others who perform all their duties equally well. The frustration and sadness

working in such a team can cause serious disengagement. The worst combination

is when a Boss from the Mines actually finds a Last to Go in the team. Now

between these 2 they have all the freedom to create toxicity for normal healthy

others.

If

you are Meets Expectation at work - you have to be a Meets Expectation at home.

If you are Exceeds Expectation at work or an Outstanding - how many can vouch

their family would rate them the same just incase there was PMS at home ?

Infact what is common is to see Exceeds Expectation at work be a PNI at home.

There

is no possible scientific explanation on how or why the human brain can or

should function for more than 7 hours of applied work ( 2 hours in all being

the various bio breaks and lunch break employees take making it a total of 9

hours of work). Physical labor can go longer than 7 hours, like in assembly

line jobs but not where the mind is at work and not where physical force is

needed. Why does college not teach the subject of Humane working conditions and

general obligations besides all just intellectual subjects? In some circles one

is not taken as a serious employee until you don't appear like the absent

minded professor. Maybe Mr Higgins from My Fsir Lady would be impressed but I

doubt if anyone in present time really is.

We

are in 2019 but these weak links spoil work culture. The families they

ignore for decades pay a heavy price. It's when they get diagnosed with a

terminal disease, that they turn around to take a deep look at so called

family. The Piss Bowl family arrives....carrying their piss bowl on their

hospital death bed trying to perform their duty for someone who ignored pretty

much all their duties on good days.

A

head honcho lived really close to where I live and was someone who epitomized

the condition. He had the lifestyle of page 3 all the way. A jet setter; a

suited older gent who perennially stayed on his phone barking orders. He had no

time for his only daughter and one day she was caught in the company of

Nigerian drug mafia. The horror was shattering. No time for his wife and she

lost her way so shamelessly that she was the talk of the town. He was known to

be someone who wanted all to mirror his style of existence at the workplace as

well. It is easy to imagine how many suffered.

Then

a heart attack happened which almost killed him. The workaholic woke up after 9

months on a wheelchair. The same family he had ignored for 25 years was by his

bed 24X7 looking after a man who had no care nor kindness for any of them.

Unfortunately some losses you can never recover from. Is annual appraisal and

boss fanning the be all and end all of life ? Then perhaps we hired very

immature, unready misfits. It's time to assess them on a Leadership potential

scale and drop them to the bottom of the rung for being who we DO NOT want to

replicate.

Very scary, but most things written in the article are seen at many a workplace. The term pissbowl , ok for eye-catching it is good but you could have used a better analogy . Article is definitely great

Seema Raghunath well written article....in fact eye opener. Company should bring change in it's working culture as employees will always submit to make their existence and growth in their team for any present working culture. Huge responsibility of HRs to convince management and take in confidence business teams that having healthy work culture not only increases productivity and less attrition in long run.
