A Pivotal Year for Democracy: Global Elections and their Impact
The recent elections in Bhutan have shown that even in the land of the Gross National Happiness Index, people can grow impatient with their political leaders and bring about change through the ballot box. As 2024 unfolds, approximately half of humanity will participate in elections worldwide, marking a significant year for civic engagement with potential profound implications.
The year kicked off with Bangladesh witnessing an incumbent prime minister securing her fourth consecutive term, amid opposition parties' boycott. Meanwhile, Tuvalu's upcoming vote may hinge on various issues, including its ties to Australia. Across Africa, 19 countries are set to hold presidential or general elections, and India's general elections in April are poised to draw global attention.
The EU Parliament elections are scheduled for June, and the UK, despite not participating in EU elections, might witness its 19th election during a recession since 1900. In the U.S., concerns about disinformation loom large, with AI tools making it easier to spread tailored conspiracy theories. The potential impact of identity-based politics poses a significant risk to global efforts to improve the world.
Despite challenges, the progress of democracy worldwide has been remarkable. From 15% in 1922, the global population under some form of democracy increased to nearly 51% by 2022. However, maintaining free and fair elections doesn't guarantee their longevity, as historical instances, like the rise of Hitler, remind us.
Democracy is nurtured rather than innate. The global transition to democratic systems, accelerated after the fall of the Berlin Wall, underscores the importance of preserving democratic institutions.

In a world where technology decentralizes trust and polarizes civic life, maintaining trust becomes crucial for the proper functioning of democracies. The fundamental right to self-determination reinforces democracy's imperative, as seen in Ukraine's increased electoral democracy index score before Russia's invasion.
While the abundance of elections in 2024 offers an opportunity for meaningful civic participation, it also brings the responsibility of making informed choices. I still remain cautiously optimistic, noting that most elections this year aren't particularly problematic. However, voters must understand the significance of their choices, especially in addressing critical issues like climate goals set for 2030.
As the world navigates this pivotal year for democracy, the hope is that the collective voice of the people will continue to shape a better future.
