A Place to Learn to Be Your Best Self

A Place to Learn to Be Your Best Self

The first college I was aware of when I was growing up was Bethune Cookman University. My dad, a pastor and civil right activist, was a huge supporter of BCU. Every year, starting in the late 1960s, he invited the president of BCU (then known as Bethune-Cookman College) to speak at whatever church my dad was pastoring. That man was Oswald P. Bronson, Sr., Ph.D., and I was honored to have Dr. Bronson’s grandson, Warnell “Johnny” Vickers, as my guest on The Crossman Conversation.

When Dr. Bronson was a child, he met BCU’s founder, Mary McLeod Bethune, who patted him on the head and told him he “would be a great man someday”. Her prediction came true. And today, that great man’s grandson is sharing that encouragement with new generations of BCU students.

“My legacy with Bethune Cookman runs very deep,” Johnny said. “It makes my heart feel good to be able to walk around those students and say, ‘I was once where you are, I understand the struggle. One day you’re going to be great. You don’t know it yet, but I do, and you’re going to be great.’”

We talked about the many benefits of choosing BCU over other colleges. If you have a teenager in your life who is making that all-important college decision, you’ll want to listen to Johnny talk about the benefits of being in a school with small classes where professors know and care about each student.

“When you go to class, that instructor is going to know who you are,” he said. “They’re going to know your name. they’re gong to know where you’re from. They’re going to know your work ethic. And they’re going to work their very hardest to get you to your fullest potential.”

One of the most powerful things Johnny said was this:

“Bethune Cookman University saves lives. I mean that in a literal sense.”

Then he shared a story of a student who credited the school with saving his life.

We talked about the history of BCU and why it’s important for people to support this amazing HBCU which attracts students from all over the world.

“If you’re wanting to invest in and mentor the next generation of great thinkers, you’re going to invest in Bethune Cookman,” Johnny said. “When you give to Bethune Cookman, you’re giving to nations.”

You’ll be moved by everything Warnell “Johnny” Vickers had to say. Listen here:
