Planning during uncertain times

Planning during uncertain times

With everything happening in the world, it can sometimes put us off, distract or be an excuse for not planning - the cost of living, brexit, lockdowns, wars, recessions, oil downturns, etc.

There will never be a perfect moment to plan, and chances are as one crisis ends, another one will appear. Don't let uncertain times put you off putting together a plan - in fact its more important, not less!

And are these various events REALLY preventing you from putting together a plan for your business? Or are you just putting something off?

Put something together - whether its a few goals, or a detailed plan.

If the idea of planning is not for you - instead ask yourself what you'd like to achieve in the next few months or the next year? Write them down - thats your plan (or at the very least a start of a plan!)!

Something is better then nothing.

Remember you can adapt, adjust and update plans as things change. Longer term plans will probably be adjusted anyway, even without uncertain times.

Even if a project you are working on doesn't work out, there's a good chance there are components, ideas, etc. that can be reused in other projects. For example, if I created a software product, and it doesn't work out, there's code that can be reused in future software. If I designed a new car, I can reuse the engines, chairs, etc. for other cars (or modes of transports)! Worse case scenario, there are components that can be sold off, so its not a complete loss or waste.

Time may be an issue. What's not working well today, may do well in the long term future. You may also need to look into whether marketing, etc. is the issue, rather then blaming current world events.

What's impossible now may be possible in 12 months time. So don't be afraid to be ambitious and include things in your plan. Technology can change, you may find others who can help, etc.

Once something is written down, and you start thinking about it, you may realise that it's more possible then you realised, and can go ahead. You may think of creative ways of achieving a goal, e.g. second hand components, working with others, going ahead on a smaller scale, testing your idea with a beta version (that can include things like events), etc.

Even if you do have to cancel and postpone, everything is in place for when you can eventually go ahead. I found this during the pandemic when I had to postpone planned events - however everything was already written down, etc. and in place for when I could eventually go ahead. It may also be an opportunity to work on those ideas further.

Still be ambitious. Even if you achieve half the things in your plan (hopefully it will be much more!), its still a great result.

Sometimes during challenging times, there will also be opportunities. How can you get people through the current crisis? What are people struggling with at the moment, and what skills, knowledge, etc. do you have that could help them?

A great piece of advice others often share - TURN OFF THE NEWS! You'll soon find you are no longer distracted or being put off events that are probably not really stopping you from planning and achieving your goals.

Even if everything seems uncertain - don't panic. Still put together some form of plan - challenging times make those plans more important, not less. Imagine you are struggling with a personal budget - does that make putting together a shopping list much or less important (so you can control spending)? The same applies to your business.

I offer planning software, which can help you (and your business) manage and keep track of your work.
