Planning Perfection vs. Fearless Execution: A Leadership Tale

Every once in a while, I dive into the world of video games, and it's during these sessions that I often stumble upon insights that apply to my work and life. My son and I play co-op games together, and it was during one of these gaming marathons that I had a revelation about what I call "The Level Up Matrix."

The Level Up Matrix is a 2x2 grid. On the Y-axis, we assess an organization or individual's ability to plan and strategize, and on the X-axis, we measure their execution capabilities.

  • High Plan, High Execute (Next Level): These are companies that excel in both strategic planning and effective execution. They're the gold standard, turning insights into actions seamlessly.
  • High Plan, Low Execute (Visionary): They're brilliant at strategizing and understanding data but need help to translate these plans into tangible outcomes.
  • Low Plan, High Execute (Reactive): Companies like this are quick to act but sometimes lack strategic depth, leading to short-term wins but potential long-term issues.
  • Low Plan, Low Execute (Emergent): These are organizations still finding their footing. They need both strategic planning and execution skills but have the potential to grow.

In our gaming adventures, I'm the type who meticulously plans every move. If the game says you must be level 10 to tackle a challenge, I'll grind until I'm at least level 15. I want to ensure I get it right the first time. My son, however, has an entirely different approach. If the game says level 10, he's ready to go at level 10. He dives in, learns from his mistakes, and keeps pushing forward.

Initially, this difference in our styles drove me crazy. I couldn't understand why he wouldn't take the time to prepare better. But then something interesting happened. Liam started advancing through the game faster than I did. While I was still leveling up and planning my strategy, he was already facing new challenges, learning, and adapting on the fly.

Our contrasting styles reflect the quadrants of the Level Up Matrix. While my methodical approach ensures steady progress with fewer setbacks, my son's quick-action style can lead to faster, albeit sometimes riskier, victories. As suggested by the matrix's top quadrant, the ideal is finding a balance between these two approaches. Combining thoughtful planning with decisive action can lead to efficient and effective progress, just like in a well-played video game.

In startups, finding the balance between planning and executing is crucial. Yes, having a plan is important, but we must also be willing to take action, make mistakes, and learn along the way. It's about knowing when to plan meticulously and when to execute fearlessly.
