Infinite scrolling. It's a simple concept, but it has a profound impact on our lives. With just a flick of a finger, we can endlessly consume content, losing ourselves in a digital vortex. While social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and even LinkedIn offer numerous benefits, it's crucial to acknowledge the negative consequences that can arise from excessive usage.

Mental Health Impact

  • Increased Anxiety and Depression: Constant exposure to curated, often idealized versions of others' lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and social comparison.
  • Lowered Self-Esteem: Negative comments, cyberbullying, and the pressure to maintain a perfect online image can erode self-worth.
  • Sleep Disruption: The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with sleep patterns, leading to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
  • Addiction: The dopamine hits associated with likes, comments, and shares can create addictive behaviors, making it difficult to disconnect.

Social and Interpersonal Impact

  • Weakened Relationships: Excessive social media use can hinder face-to-face interactions, leading to superficial relationships and a decline in empathy.
  • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): The constant stream of updates can create a sense of urgency, making individuals feel like they're always missing out on something important.
  • Reduced Productivity: Distractions from social media can significantly impact work performance, academic achievement, and overall productivity.

The Positive Side to Social Media

Don't get me wrong. It's not all doom and gloom. I mean... I'm here. And you're here. So that's cool. A lot of great things are possible because of social media such as....

  • Access to Information and Education: Social media provides a vast array of information and educational resources at our fingertips. We can follow experts, learn new skills, and stay updated on current events through news feeds, blogs, online courses, and of course, the Autodesk Community Forums!
  • Enhanced Connectivity: Social media platforms have revolutionized the way we connect with friends, family, and like-minded individuals across the globe. It allows us to stay in touch with loved ones, even when we're physically distant, and build new relationships based on shared interests.
  • Social and Political Activism: Social media has become a powerful tool for social and political activism. It enables individuals to raise awareness about important issues, mobilize communities, and drive social change. Platforms like X and Instagram have been instrumental in movements like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter.
  • Economic Opportunities: Social media has created new economic opportunities for individuals and businesses. It allows entrepreneurs to reach a wider audience, promote their products or services, and build their personal and business brands. Additionally, many individuals have turned their social media presence into successful careers as influencers or content creators.
  • Community Building and Support: Social media platforms have fostered the growth of online communities where people can find support, share experiences, and connect with others who share similar interests or struggles. These communities can be particularly beneficial for individuals facing mental health challenges, chronic illnesses, or other personal difficulties.

How to Reclaim Your Time and Well-being

  • Set Limits: I've made it a habit to NOT look at my phone for the first hour I'm awake. This was a difficult one to overcome because like many of you, I got into the bad habit of picking up my phone immediately after waking up, before I even put my feet on the floor.
  • Delete social media apps from your phone: Deleting the apps is a great way to begin reclaiming your life. You can still keep your accounts, but just try deleting the apps for a while. If people aren't texting you asking where you've been in a while, chances are you're not getting much out of those online friendships. You may even consider deleting that social media account at that point. By the way... have any of you noticed I'm no longer on X/Twitter? I deleted that account well before the name change and quite frankly, I don't miss it at all.
  • Practice Mindfulness: I've been using a meditation app called Insight Timer for probably close to two years now, but only recently have I been extremely mindful (no pun intended) on using it I have a 40 day streak going that I don't intend to break anytime soon. I listen to it every night, helping me clear my head from all the digital chatter that goes on every day, whether it's Slack & Teams messages, emails, texts, or Zoom calls. As a result of my 40 day streak, I have a greater feeling of ease, calmness, awareness, and presence.
  • Digital Detox: My recent sabbatical was a great forced opportunity to take a digital detox from social media (and all other forms of daily communications such as email, Slack and Teams). It provided an opportunity to focus on other creative and intentional activities such as art and mindful meditation.
  • Mindful Consumption: Be selective about the content you consume and unfollow accounts that negatively impact your mental health. For those of us who pick up our phone first thing in the morning, this can be especially detrimental because you're immediately flooded with negative thoughts and emotions which follow you throughout your day.
  • Prioritize Real-Life Connections: This can't be overstated enough! Spend quality time with loved ones and engage in offline activities. My wife and I love kayaking and this a great chance for us to take a break from our phones, be with each other in the moment, and outdoors.

Conclusion

My intention of this post is to share information that you may consider when thinking about your own social media usage and I hope you ask yourself a few questions in the process:

  1. How does it serve me? Is it worth your time to watch the video of the drunken, belligerent soccer mom who got pulled over by the police for speeding through a construction zone? Could you have spent those 47 minutes learning something new, reading a book, or working on your art instead?
  2. What do I get out of it? Did watching that video of a dog riding a turtle enhance your life in any way? Are you a better person for it? How will sharing that video enhance someone else's life?
  3. What's my intention for posting something? By posting a heavy filtered alteration of the real world, are you hoping others will think your life is anything less than perfect? Because it's not. We're all perfectly flawed and that's okay.

Moving forward, my hope is that you are more intentional about what you post and that you take time to live in the moment and ‘like’ and ‘share’ that moment with no one other than yourself. Enjoy the moment as-is, unfiltered and disconnected from the digital world. But if you must share the moment, share it through personal interactions and stories with friends and loved ones.
