PNGEITI Makes Significant Contribution to Porgera Community Development Forum

The Papua New Guinea Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (PNGEITI) played a pivotal role in the Porgera Community Development Forum held last week at the Innovative University of Enga, Enga Province.

Represented by Director for Policy and Programs George Kauli, PNGEITI emphasized its commitment to fostering transparency and accountability in Papua New Guinea's extractive industries. Kauli stated, "PNGEITI's participation in the Porgera Community Development Forum underscores our commitment to fostering transparency and accountability in Papua New Guinea's extractive industries. By integrating a clause into the Community Development Agreement that mandates parties to disclose their activities and financial information in accordance with EITI standards, we aim to build trust and ensure that all stakeholders benefit from a more transparent and equitable process."

The primary objective of PNGEITI's involvement was to embed a clause in the Community Development Agreement (CDA) that mandates the disclosure of activities and financial information by all parties, aligning with EITI standards. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and accountability within the extractive industry.

The forum brought together impacted landowners, the Enga Provincial Government, New Porgera Ltd operator Barrick Niugini Limited, and the State team led by the Mineral Resources Authority. These stakeholders benefited from PNGEITI's impartial presence.

The transparency body comprising of government agencies, extractive industry companies, and civil societies, PNGEITI played a crucial role in encouraging open discussions and fostering better collaborations and negotiations among the parties. Throughout the process, the level of trust and confidence among participants was noticeably enhanced.

By maintaining a neutral stance, PNGEITI provided a platform for all parties to engage in constructive dialogue, ultimately promoting a more collaborative and transparent approach to discussing the community benefits of the New Porgera Mine.
