In recent times, direct attach cables (DACs) have become an increasingly popular option in data center operations. They use the same ports as optical transceivers but offer the benefit of time and cost savings in short-reach applications.

Direct attach cables are commonly used to support high transfer rates between network devices like servers and switches. This blog post tends to introduce what DAC are and their most common types. Also, it covers the industry dynamics, growth drivers, and top segments in the direct attach cable market. Read on!

What is a Direct Attach Cable?

A direct attach cable, also referred to as direct cable or high-speed cable is a type of cost-effective solution to replace optical modules. It comes with factory-terminated transmission modules that allow direct connection to “transceivers”. DACs are available in several lengths, ranging from a few feet up to 10 meters.

Direct attach cables have a fixed length of shielded copper coaxial with fixed pluggable transceivers. Sometimes, fiber optic cables may be used instead of the shielded copper coaxial. Both the ends of these cables are connected to fixed ports only. Also, these cables don’t need any expensive lasers or other electronic components.

Industry Analysis

According to our latest analysis, the market for direct attach cables is projected to grow at a healthy rate. The direct attach cable market size was USD 6.84 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 36.8%, generating an estimated revenue of USD 156.83 billion by 2032.

The market is primarily driven by:

·        Increased demand for high-speed data transmission

·        Ability to reduce the need for additional networking hardware

·        Rise of cloud computing services

Types of Direct Attach Cables

There are four main types of direct attach cables. Below, we’ve given a quick overview of each of these:

Direct connect DAC: This direct attach cable type has factory-terminated transmission modules that enable it to connect directly to the ports of active equipment such as routers and switches.

Breakout DAC: This type of direct attach cable enables connectivity between network devices with different speed ports.

Active DAC: Active DAC manufactured by direct attach cable market key players have electronics for signal conditioning. They are used when signal conditioning incorporated into a port isn’t provided by a switch.

Passive DAC: Passive DAC cables don’t have electronics for signal conditioning. They have a comparatively higher upfront cost than active DAC and are utilized when signal conditioning integrated into a port isn’t provided by a switch.

Direct Attach Cable Market

The Telecommunications Segment Accounted for the Largest Share

By end-user, the telecommunications segment accounted for the largest market share. Active optical cables play a key role in the telecommunications sector by enabling quick and error-free data transmission from one location to another. With a rapid rise in worldwide population, the demand for additional data centers and improved internet infrastructure has increased. In response to this rise in network demand, the deployment of efficient data communication cables become imperative.
