Police Crackdown: 236 Drivers Arrested For Traffic Offenses During Festive Season.
The Uganda Police Force has announced heightened security measures to ensure public safety during New Year’s celebrations. Speaking at the weekly press conference held at Naguru on December 30, 2024, police representatives expressed concerns about a spike in crime during the festive season and outlined steps being taken to curb lawlessness.
Addressing Festive Season Crime Surge
The police spokesperson, Mr. Kituuma Rusoke, reported that law enforcement agencies have been working tirelessly to address safety challenges associated with the festive season. From December 26th to 30th, a focused crackdown on traffic violations led to the arrest of 236 drivers for offenses such as reckless driving, endangering themselves and other road users.
“These operations aim to reduce road accidents and ensure that all citizens can enjoy the festivities safely,” said SP Kananura Michael, spokesperson for the Traffic Road and Safety Directorate.
Regulating New Year’s Celebrations
In a bid to prevent chaos during New Year’s festivities, the Uganda Police Force announced plans to regulate celebrations. Key measures include the deployment of personnel to strategic locations and increased patrols at concerts, prayer sessions, and other large gatherings.
The police further emphasized that only contractors licensed under the Explosives Act will be allowed to display fireworks. Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated, “Only contractors licensed under the Explosives Act will be permitted to display fireworks, following standard fireworks protocols.” Organizers who breach regulations, such as setting off fireworks outside permitted hours, will face legal repercussions.
Crackdown on Destructive Behaviors
Law enforcement agencies are also addressing other forms of destructive behavior, including the burning of tires and reckless driving. The police have vowed to arrest anyone engaging in such actions, citing their potential to harm lives and property.
These measures underscore the Uganda Police Force's commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the country, ensuring that citizens can usher in the New Year in a safe and secure environment.
As the celebrations draw closer, the public is urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and adhere to safety guidelines.
