SME divide revealed on environmental targets. BCC research carried out ahead of COP 29, the UN Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan, has found a clear divide among SMEs on environmental targets. The survey, by the BCC’s award-winning Insights Unit, shows around half of businesses with more than 50 employees say they have a recycling target (50%) or energy consumption target (45%) in place. However, for businesses with fewer than 50 employees, the figures fall to 35% and 25%, respectively.
The picture for all SMEs shows businesses are most likely to have a plan for recycling or waste reduction (38%). But less than a third (28%) have a written target for energy consumption, while only a quarter (24%) have set a goal for their carbon footprint/emissions. A third (32%) say they don’t have plans to introduce a recycling target – while another 29% are considering one. 39% say they won’t introduce energy consumption targets, whereas 32% are considering doing so. Meanwhile 39% have no plans to bring in carbon footprint targets. However, while many SMEs may not have formal targets, most are engaging in efficiency or environmental measures with low energy lighting (65%) and recycling (59%) the most common.
The national wraparound childcare programme is part of the childcare reforms announced at the 2023 Spring Budget. The government’s ambition is that by 2026, all parents and carers of primary school-aged children who need it will be able to access term time childcare in their local area from 8am-6pm. This programme will only focus on primary school-aged children from reception to year 6, Monday to Friday during term time. Westmorland and Furness Council would like to capture the views of parents, carers and families by inviting them to complete a survey to help shape and support wraparound childcare in Westmorland and Furness to meet the needs of children, parents, carers and families. Please encourage colleagues to take part in the survey which is available here Wraparound Childcare Parent Survey 2024.
The UK government has confirmed plans to implement a UK carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) from January 2027. In line with BCC submissions to HM Treasury, glass and ceramics have been initially removed from scope. The threshold for importers affected by the measure will be those importing £50,000 or more per annum of CBAM goods. You can find out more here Updated_4038_-_Introduction_of_a_UK_Carbon_Border_Adjustment_Mechanism_from_January_2027_-_Government_response_to_the_policy_design_consultation.pdf.
The rollout of the Single Trade Window has been paused for the 2025/26 period. Consultations are planned ahead of the finalisation of Phase 2 of the spending review in the spring. New guidance on submitting inbound safety and security declarations for EU imports is expected soon, ahead of changes taking effect at the end of January. Trade negotiations for an improved UK trade deal with South Korea began last week. Key areas for new trading terms benefiting the Chamber Network could be on digital trade and enhancing supply chains.
