By Mike Allen (@mikeallen; mallen@politico.com), with Daniel Lippman (@dlippman; dlippman@politico.com)
Good Monday morning. DRIVING THE DAY: Sen. Marco Rubio announces at 6 p.m. in Miami, with the slogan/theme “A New American Century,” and remarks designed to be forward-looking and optimistic in tone and message. He’s the third Republican to officially jump in, after Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul. Trying to make a virtue of being sandwiched between Hillary’s video announcement and her early-state travel, Marco aims to send a page-turning message. His speech begins at 6:03 p.m. and lasts approximately 12 minutes, and will be livestreamed on MarcoRubio.com. Marco will speak about his family's story in the context of the American dream, and outline a new agenda to protect the dream for future generations.
Rubio will sit down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos this afternoon for a piece to air on “Good Morning America” tomorrow, and will talk to NPR’s Steve Inskeep today in Miami. That interview airs on “Morning Edition” at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. Immediately after the speech, the senator joins Sean Hannity to tape an hour-long edition of Fox News “Hannity.”
Rubio aides say 3,512 people requested tickets before registration closed on Friday, from every state except Vermont. Freedom Tower, once known as “the Ellis Island of the South” for its role from 1962 to 1974 as a federal assistance center for Cubans fleeing to the U.S. for political asylum, only holds about 1,000 people. So the Rubio campaign created a second event across the street, with a Jumbotron showing the pre-program (begins 5:30) and speech. Attendees will get Marco signs. Team Rubio fielded requests for more than 190 media credentials from over 65 outlets.
HILLARY and HUMA spent yesterday in a van headed for Iowa, with Secretary Clinton tweeting: “Road trip! Loaded the van & set off for IA. Met a great family when we stopped [for gas in Pennsylvania] this afternoon. Many more to come.” See the pic. http://bit.ly/1I5RR1l You just MIGHT be able to get a Hillary aide to confide to you that this trip was ALL HER IDEA. Per Google maps, Chappaqua to Des Moines is 17 hours -- 1,136 miles! Don’t you wish you were in the van? Let’s play the license-plate game!
A kickoff event is planned next month. In the meantime, during what the campaign is calling “the ramp-up phase,” she’ll be doing low-key, listening-tour-type events as grassroots organizers set up shop in all 50 states. The campaign will lavish love on all four early states – Iowa, N.H., S.C. and Nevada – as part of the “taking nothing for granted” posture.
Hillary’s launch video, posted about 3 p.m. (to provide a little extra excitement for antsy reporters expecting a noon launch), begins with vignettes about everyday Americans’ “getting ready” plans for spring, including a gay couple planning to get married.
JOHN DICKERSON in Slate: “The campaign video ... was all about the people—expectant parents, job seekers, a same-sex couple on the verge of marriage, and women of all ages and ethnicities. This was a celebration of what National Journal’s Ron Brownstein called the ‘coalition of the ascendant’—the young people, minorities, and college-educated whites—especially women—who helped give Barack Obama his two victories and who Democrats think are the key to a string of future presidential victories.” http://cbsn.ws/1I62rWc
Clinton doesn’t pop up until 90 seconds in: “I’m getting ready to do something, too: I’m running for president! ... So I’m hitting the road, to earn your vote.” The message: The campaign is about other people (not her). The video, made by the Clinton creative team, was shot over the past few weeks in a number of locations, including Iowa and N.H. Everyone in the video was a supporter, and didn't know the video was going to be for her campaign. Hillary was filmed outside her home in Chappaqua last week. The coffee shop was Lange's Little Store, the Clintons’ local coffee shop in Chappaqua.
See the Hillary for America logo (a blue “H” with a red, Fed-Ex-like arrow as the crossbar) at www.hillary.clinton.com. See the 2-min., 18-sec. “Getting Started” video here. http://bit.ly/1IWZyaj
After the video posted, the two guys took to Twitter to invite her to their wedding. http://bit.ly/1HjnVki At 10 p.m., seven hours after launch, she had 1.4 million Facebook views; 88,200 retweets and 82,300 favorites; and 1.23 million YouTube views.
FACEBOOK DATA: 4.7 million people on Facebook generated 10.1 million interactions yesterday related to Hillary’s announcement. The equivalent figures for Ted Cruz (24 hours surrounding announcement) were 2.1 million people and 5.5 million interactions, and for Rand Paul: 865,000 people, 1.9 million interactions.

--“How Clinton video is designed face by face to win White House,” by David Lightman, McClatchy Washington Bureau (runs on Miami Herald front): “Clinton tried to address [Warren] concerns in her video, saying ‘the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top.’” http://bit.ly/1O5ZHtP
--“Times Reporters [Pat Healy and Maggie Haberman] Analyze Clinton’s Presidential Announcement Video [over instant messages]”: “Pat: It’s definitely a hopeful, optimistic video — talking about spring, new jobs, new homes, a gay couple getting married. Very forward-looking — and no references to her own past, and certainly not to the Clinton era of the 1990s. Maggie: ... This video is very much about the Democratic coalition of today ... [A] gay couple getting married as a campaign centerpiece would have been unimaginable even in the President Obama re-elect in 2012. I’m still not clear what her campaign message is from this video, however.” http://nyti.ms/1CA8LS7

** A message from the National Pork Producers Council: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is the most significant economic opportunity in history for U.S. pork producers and many other sectors of the economy. When Congress passes Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), the U.S. will have the final leverage needed to close the TPP negotiations. Learn more at http://bit.ly/1NklSBt **
N.Y. TIMES Quotation of the Day -- POPE FRANCIS, describing the mass killing of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks as the first genocide of the 20th century: “It seems that humanity is incapable of putting a halt to the shedding of innocent blood. It seems that the human family has refused to learn from its mistakes caused by the law of terror, so that today, too, there are those who attempt to eliminate others with the help of a few, and with the complicit silence of others who simply stand by.”
PLAYBOOK INTERVIEW with CBS News political director John Dickerson, 46, named yesterday to succeed Bob Schieffer as anchor of “Face the Nation,” sometime in early summer. CBS News President David Rhodes told us that he picked Dickerson because “we want a reporter in the job.” Dickerson told us: “My hopes are that I can continue doing what Bob did, which is: make news, not be cynical ... try to by Sunday bring [the week’s news] together and kind of make sense of it as well as drive it forward.” John told us that he’ll continue to write for Slate, and will go on the campaign trail for the show.
PLAYBOOK: “You tweeted about your family connection to ‘Face the Nation.’”
DICKERSON: “When Mom [the late Nancy Dickerson, who became famous as a pioneering NBC News correspondent] first started at CBS after working on the Hill, she was an associate producer for the broadcast on its very first show on November 7, 1954. ... Its first show, Joe McCarthy is coming on. The Senate is about to take up his case, and he comes on the show and he’s already, of course, riled everybody up in the Senate. But then he says that basically the Senate investigation of him is going to be what he called ‘a lynch party’ -- basically saying that his colleagues are trying to lynch him, which they already didn’t like him enough. And so then he ... infuriated them further. So on the first broadcast—it was a big piece of news—and ... she was there ... helping put that first show together.”
PLAYBOOK: “How has your mom’s success in network news influenced you?”
DICKERSON: “We had a bit of a rocky go of it when I was a teenager. So ... there was a period in my life where I never would have admitted that she had any influence. And now that I'm not as much of a genius as I was at age 14, ... I find myself telling my own kid a lot of the stuff she used to tell me -- both verbally, but then also trying to sort of live my life that way, as well. The most impressive thing about her was how she worked and how hard she tried, because she was told she couldn't do what she ended up doing. She was told: ‘Sorry, you’re not going to get on the air.’ And she just kept working it. Then she was told: ‘Sorry, you’re not serious enough.’ And she just kept working at it.”
FIRST PERSON -- “My Son Might Be Alive Today If Police Wore Body Cameras,” by William B. Scott, on Politico: “Officer William Mosher—who panicked and shot my son as Erik and his girlfriend calmly walked out the door of a Costco—... might not have panicked and fired at Erik. ... If you’re entrusted with a badge and gun, then you must be held accountable by being required to wear bodycams ... Honest, well-behaved officers actually welcome body cameras, knowing they are an effective tool of both deterrence and protection.” http://politi.co/1CH4NG4
HILL TWEETS -- @Messina2012: “And so it begins. Fired up, ready for Hilary.”
--@brianstelter: “15 minutes into Clinton campaign launch -- only U.S. Twitter trend higher than ‘Hillary Clinton’ is ‘#WhyImNotVotingForHillary’”
--@dan_munz: “MSNBC has…live footage of Hillary's twitter account page. This is going to be a weird year and a half.”

--Jennifer Palmieri @jmpalmieri: “@jonfavs @AlyssaMastro44 it is a Mastro worthy idea, but in this case it actually was @HillaryClinton's idea. She loves her Scooby van.”

--“Clinton Asks Elected Officials to Tap into Their Supporter Networks,” by Bloomberg’s Jen Epstein: “Clinton’s team is asking members of Congress and governors to show their support by encouraging their own networks of supporters to pitch in, rather than simply offering an endorsement. It’s another lesson learned from her 2008 campaign—to focus on organizing and on the grassroots rather than on appeasing elected and party officials.” http://bloom.bg/1OqXsTY
--“Clinton’s goal: Keep Bill Clinton happy, involved,” by Annie Karni: “Her new team has more confidence that she will be seen by voters as her own woman, with an identity separate from Bill. --NATE SILVER, “Clinton Begins The 2016 Campaign, And It’s A Toss-up”: “[I]t’s almost as if voters are dispensing with all the formalities and evaluating her as they might when she’s on the ballot next November. In the sketch, Clinton warms up for her social media announcement. ‘Hillary’s a granny with a twinkle in her eye,’ she recites, later adding ‘First female president, first female president. Me me me me me me me.’ Clinton’s first take at a cell phone video announcement doesn’t go so well when she declares, ‘citizens, you will elect me, I will be your leader.’” 5-min. video: http://bzfd.it/1DALofa

** A message from the National Pork Producers Council: Since 1989, when the United States began using bilateral and regional trade agreements to open foreign markets, U.S. agricultural exports have nearly quadrupled in value and now stand at a record $152.5 billion. Exports in 2014 supported more than 1 million full-time jobs – more than half of those created in the past 10 years. Each trade agreement was made possible by the enactment of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA).
The opportunity that now sits in front of the U.S., the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), has the potential to be the highest-standard, most economically significant regional Free Trade Agreement (FTA) ever negotiated. But to seize this opportunity and close the TPP negotiations, TPA must be renewed by Congress. Learn more at http://bit.ly/1NklSBt **
