Port of Vancouver USA Announces Lecture Series

The Port of Vancouver USA is inviting the public to learn more about the port and the Columbia River via its annual lecture series, the first two of which were announced today. Two more lectures will be announced in the coming weeks.

The port lecture series is free to the public, and offers key insights to how the port and the Columbia River system work.

The first of the two announced lectures, “Awful and Magnificent Grandeur” – Navigating the Columbia River Bar with the Columbia River Bar Pilots will be held on Tuesday, March 20 at Warehouse 23 (100 Columbia Street), while the second “From Farm to Table and the World” – Tugs and Barges, the Workhorses of the Columbia-Snake Willamette River System is scheduled for the same venue on Tuesday, April 3. Both events run from 6:30-8 p.m.

In “Awful and Magnificent Grandeur” Capt. Dan Jordan of the Columbia River Pilots will describe through slides and video, how crashing surf, high water flows and fierce winds combine to create daunting conditions at the mouth of the Columbia River, one of the most dangerous navigation stretches of water in the world.

In “Farm to Table and the World”, Rob Rich, Vice President of Marine Services for Shaver Transportation will discuss how the barge and tug system works on the rivers and how the system is one of the most environmentally sound ways of moving cargo in the world.

While the lectures are free, space at each lecture is limited and pre-registration is required. To register call (360) 693-3611 or email rsvp@portvanusa.com. If you have any questions contact Julie Rawls at the Port of Vancouver (360) 992-1137 or jrawls@portvanusa.com.
