THE POSITIVE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF TEENAGERS.
Let me start by reminding us all that the Social media is here to stay. With Facebook having over 500 million users, while Twitter has over 200 million. That’s not even counting individual blogs or video blogs. There’s no doubt that teenagers constitute a huge percentage of those that are actively engaged in online communities, but what are some of the positive influence these platforms are having on the academic performance of teenagers nowadays?
Definition of the social media
Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. Social media depends on mobile and web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content.
types
Although there are so many types depending on several factors, six types would be listed for the benefit of this topic:
Social Networks – allow you to connect with other people of similar interests and background. Usually they consist of a profile, various ways to interact with other users, ability to setup groups, etc. The most popular are Facebook and LinkedIn.
Bookmarking Sites – allow you to save, organize and manage links to various websites and resources around the internet. Most allow you to “tag” your links to make them easy to search and share. The most popular are Delicious and StumbleUpon.
Social News – allow people to post various news items or links to outside articles and then allows it’s users to”vote” on the items. The voting is the core social aspect as the items that get the most votes are displayed the most prominently. The community decides which news items get seen by more people. The most popular are Digg and Reddit.
Media Sharing – allow you to upload and share various media such as pictures and video. Most services have additional social features such as profiles, commenting, etc. The most popular are YouTube and Flickr.
Microblogging – focus on short updates that are pushed out to anyone subscribed to receive the updates. The most popular is Twitter.
Blog Comments and Forums - Online forums allow members to hold conversations by posting messages. Blog comments are similar except they are attached to blogs and usually the discussion centers around the topic of the blog post.
POSITIVE INFLUENCE
- Social media did make the world a smaller place, now we have more information, more knowledge, and have better opportunities to use it.
- Social media has improved our ability to absorb information, what would have seemed to be overwhelming to someone 20 years ago is normal to us, we have an extreme ease in processing and we are evolving quickly.
- Social media has helped teenagers as students gain a better perspective and direction of what they want, now they have ease of reaching to mentors in the same industry and people already working in their dream company, and get a taste of what it is like, which was quite impossible 10 years ago.
- Teenagers can now access hundreds of thousands of educational resources in little time and can even discuss in real time with experts on any subject or topic whatsoever.
- Teenagers can now get closer to art and design, and are exposed continuously to new ideas, and are given a big chance to feed their creativity.
- Talents get discovered faster, teenagers who are good at programming get their name out their easily – a very good example is the recent news of the two brothers Anesi and Osine Ikhianosime that developed an Android based web browser called Crocodile Browser Lite sometime last year – there are a whole lot of other examples out there.
There is the popular Google which has helped over 20 million students in their education, using tools the search engine has made available.
Social media when properly used increases productivity and helps teenagers learn how to work well in groups.
There are so many free online tests and courses that teenagers can take advantage of to help them in positively improving their academic performance.
