1️⃣. Weekly commentary, “The positive and negative aspects of being green February 2022 week #8

“For a person who is not aware that he is doing anything wrong has no desire to be put right. You have to catch yourself doing it before you can reform.”—Lucius Annaeus Seneca

2021 was a significant year for global climate change policy and market-based approaches to environmental protection. Yet, it went largely unnoticed around the world, outside, that is, of the most significant benefit of emissions, global greening, the increase year after year of green vegetation on the planet's land surface.

Some countries have already taken meaningful actions to strengthen environmental rules and boost clean energy options and are expected to get more challenging in these areas. But believing what happened at COP26, influences can be identified in the current preoccupation with sustainable development goals, calls for radical ecological economics, and movements against materialism, over-technification, developmentalism, and globalism.

Of course, the question is whether it will be possible to think differently and merely discover that this world represents various aspects of what we thought was the positive or negative impact of our footprints?

2️⃣. 📝 Stepping back from the noise, I try to work out what matters in sustainability, what's really happening, and what it might mean.

I’m starting this weekly thread shared on Wednesdays called “What matters in sustainability“ to bring about better language, debate, understanding, and impact. The aim is not to support, endorse, or promote “one” idea, solution, technology, process, method, or opinion. But as a community, it is about sharing views and bringing critical thinking to improve our messages together. Every Friday, I’ll share insights and takeaways with Premium subscribers on Sustainability Insights.

Over the past few weeks, I had the chance to learn a lot from valuable conversations with some of you. I was able to gain more insights into some of your challenges.

Here are some points I’ve been discussing and that I am happy to explore over the following weeks:

  • The sustainability world is extremely complex and little understood.
  • There are multiple levels of consideration when adopting and deploying a sustainability plan in organizations.
  • The concerns around sustainability matters cause friction and numerous concerns.
  • Most sustainable business models fail, which is why everything you know about planning a sustainable strategy is probably wrong.
  • Why do humanity's crises seem far from inevitable to bring back sustainability and improve resilience?

Of course, there are many more points that I look forward to sharing. Please feel free to comment so we can build a better future together.

One of the Main Problems with Green Energy is that it fundamentally requires a SIGNIFICANT Amount of LONG-TERM Commitment. In My Personal View : (GENUINE) COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE SOURCES OF GREEN ENERGY is Far More Important than (GREEN-WASHED) INVESTMENT IN SUSTAINABLE SOURCES OF GREEN ENERGY. Germany (For Example) is now said to be (SLOWLY) returning to COAL for it's (Basic) Energy Needs - despite making Lots (& Lots) of Very Good Noises at the COP26 Summit in Glasgow (barely a Short While Ago in November 2021). Truth Be Told : Russia (as in *HARDMAN PUTIN*) is currently responsible for about 60% (SIXTY PERCENT) of GERMANY'S Gas Supplies. Hence the Urgent Need for Germany to (Speedily) Head Back to the Coal Mines (irrespective of Whatsoever was Promised at COP26). According to One of my Cheeky Medical Dames in Berlin : "Fear of *PUTIN* is the Beginning of Wisdom". . . .
