Potential ILA Strike to hit US Ports
Negotiations between the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) are set to resume on January 7, 2025, just over a week before the current contract extension expires on January 15. While an agreement has been reached regarding wages, both parties remain at an impasse over the contentious issue of port automation.
The resumption of talks comes on the heels of carrier announcements indicating potential container surcharges in the event of a strike, as well as recent support from President-Elect Trump for the ILA's position against port automation.
The last round of formal negotiations occurred in mid-November. Should the ILA and USMX fail to finalize a new master agreement by January 15, the union has confirmed its intent to strike across U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports starting January 16.

1wInteresting timing with peak season planning approaching. A look back at the 2002 West Coast disruption, I know how crucial early preparation is. The automation vs. jobs debate isn't going away, but let's hope both sides can find common ground before Jan 15. I'll be keeping close tabs on those Jan 7 talks - too much at stake for another port shutdown. 🔍 Thanks for sharing this update!
