The Power of Certification: Building Connections, Inspiring Change, and Growing a Women-Owned Business

When I first started Subarzsweets, my journey was driven by passion and a challenge from my daughters to pursue what truly made me happy. From those first batches of Subarz in my kitchen to becoming a certified women-owned business, I’ve learned that running a successful small business is about much more than simply making a great product. It’s about building connections, creating opportunities, and being part of something larger than yourself.

Today, Subarzsweets is proudly certified as a women-owned business through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). We’re also certified as a small business and hold several local certifications. These credentials have not only opened doors to new opportunities but have also connected us to a broader community of entrepreneurs, corporations, and organizations that are committed to making a difference.

The Value of Certification

The certification process isn’t just a box to check off; it’s an important step in positioning your business for growth and success. Through WBENC, we’ve gained access to networking events, educational resources, and a community of like-minded women business owners who understand the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship.

But the benefits go beyond networking. Certification provides credibility and trust, signaling to potential clients and partners that you’ve met rigorous standards. For businesses like mine, that credibility can be the key to landing contracts with major corporations that prioritize supplier diversity. It’s a tangible acknowledgment of the hard work, dedication, and resilience that it takes to build and grow a business.

Meeting the Champions of Supplier Diversity

One of the most inspiring aspects of being certified is meeting the individuals who work tirelessly within large corporations to drive supplier diversity. These are people who are genuinely passionate about creating opportunities for underrepresented businesses and making sure that diverse voices are heard and valued in the supply chain. Their dedication is both humbling and motivating.

As a small business owner, I’ve been consistently impressed by the number of large companies that not only have robust supplier diversity programs but also allocate significant resources and personnel to them. These companies understand that supporting women-owned, minority-owned, and other diverse businesses is not just a checkbox – it’s a strategic priority that drives innovation, economic growth, and stronger communities.

The Impact of Local Certifications

In addition to national certification, local certifications have also played a crucial role in our growth. These programs often connect small businesses with local government contracts, community initiatives, and regional events where we can showcase our products. They’ve provided us with opportunities to partner with local organizations and give back to the community, which has always been at the heart of what we do at Subarzsweets.

For instance, our certification as a small business has allowed us to participate in local programs designed to support businesses like ours. We’ve been able to collaborate with other local certified businesses, creating a network of mutual support and shared success. These partnerships are a reminder that when we lift each other up, we all rise together.

Lessons Learned and Moving Forward

Looking back on the certification journey, there are a few key lessons I’ve learned that I believe are valuable for any business owner considering the path of certification:

  1. Do Your Research: There are many certification programs available, each with its own criteria, benefits, and costs. Take the time to understand which certifications align with your business goals and will provide the most value for your specific needs.
  2. Leverage Your Network: Once you’re certified, don’t just sit back – get involved! Attend events, join discussions, and connect with other certified businesses. The more you engage with the community, the more opportunities you’ll find to learn, grow, and collaborate.
  3. Be Persistent: The certification process can be challenging, especially for small businesses with limited resources. But the long-term benefits – increased visibility, credibility, and access to new markets – are well worth the effort.
  4. Stay True to Your Mission: Certifications can open doors, but they’re just one piece of the puzzle. Always stay focused on delivering value to your customers and staying true to the mission that drives your business. For us, that mission is spreading sweetness through handcrafted treats that bring joy to every occasion.

Looking to the Future

As we move forward, I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. Certification is not a destination; it’s a stepping stone to greater impact and broader reach. I’m particularly inspired by the connections we’ve made with other women-owned businesses. The stories of resilience, creativity, and innovation I hear from fellow entrepreneurs remind me every day of the power of community and collaboration.

In the coming months, we’ll continue to explore new ways to expand our reach, deepen our partnerships, and give back to the communities that have supported us. Whether it’s through corporate gifting, collaborating with local businesses, or simply spreading joy one Subarz at a time, our goal remains the same: to create meaningful connections and contribute positively to the world around us.

Conclusion: Celebrating Progress and Continuing the Journey

Being a certified women-owned and small business has been a transformative experience. It has opened doors, connected us to incredible people, and reinforced the belief that supporting diverse businesses is a win for everyone. I’m grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to grow and the relationships we’ve built along the way.

To every organization that prioritizes supplier diversity, to every individual championing these efforts, and to every fellow business owner navigating this journey – thank you. Together, we’re creating a more inclusive, equitable, and vibrant business landscape, one step at a time.

Let’s keep supporting one another, celebrating our successes, and pushing for positive change. The road ahead is filled with possibility, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next.

Thank you for sharing your journey and insights. Truly inspirational.
