The Power to C.H.O.O.S.E: Leadership Resilience in the Face of Adversity

September, as Suicide Prevention Month, brings a poignant reminder: we all have the power to choose. As leaders, this power goes beyond decision-making—it shapes our organizations, teams, and communities. Leadership is about showing up during adversity, making tough decisions, and owning those choices, even when the path ahead is uncertain. The greatest leaders understand that their power lies in their ability to make these choices, especially when faced with challenging or uncomfortable situations.

At its core, leadership is about creating a sense of safety, belonging, and purpose for those in our charge. Each choice we make has a ripple effect on the people we lead, the clients we serve, and the broader community. But leadership also requires intentional decision-making, rooted in purpose and a sense of responsibility. When leaders make choices, they send a message: “This is what matters.” That message can be more impactful than any strategic plan.

This is where the C.H.O.O.S.E. framework comes into play. It’s a powerful tool for guiding leaders through difficult decisions:

  • C – Clarify Your Purpose: Reconnect with your organization’s “why” before making any decision. It ensures every choice aligns with your mission.
  • H – Harness Your Resources: Leadership isn’t about having more but making the most of what you already have.
  • O – Outline the Options: Map out every possibility to gain clarity, even in uncertain times.
  • O – Own the Responsibility: Leadership is about accountability, owning the outcomes of your decisions.
  • S – See the Long-Term Impact: Always think about the long-term effects of your choices.
  • E – Empower Action: Once decisions are made, empower your team to bring them to life.

Ultimately, leadership resilience is about choosing life, joy, and action—especially when faced with adversity. Leaders who choose with intention create spaces where others feel safe to make their own choices. In moments of crisis, it’s not about having all the answers; it’s about standing up, being present, and guiding others through uncertainty.
