The Power of Outrageous Goals
What is an “Outrageous Goal?”
An Outrageous Goal is not merely an ambitious objective; it is a challenge that stretches current capabilities and is rooted in a strong vision for the future. Said another way, outrageous goals require and create transformational change.
These aren’t just any goals; they are bold, ambitious, and seemingly unattainable targets that push us to transcend our limits.
For organizations, businesses, and individuals driven to accomplish something meaningful, having an Outrageous Goal will reshape your approach, accelerate your ROI, and increase your impact. Pair these goals with Outrageous Kindness, and the results will be even more far-reaching.
This is the power corporate and organizational leaders tap into as part of a complete “CEO Mindset.” It is more than an ability to think and “dream” big; effective leaders know how to visualize and put into action what is possible and believe in what is achievable through hard work, passion, initiative, collaboration, and desire.
That is not to say that we will always achieve our Outrageous Goals, but it is an affirmation that we learn, grow, improve, and accomplish more when we throw ourselves into the effort and celebrate each little victory along the way.
The Power of Outrageous Goals
If we cannot always achieve them, then why aim for the height of an Outrageous Goal? Because their power is transformative.
Consider this: nonprofit organizations are at the forefront of solving some of our world’s toughest and most pressing issues, usually with limited resources. In my career, my teams have conducted countless assessments for leading nonprofit organizations to determine if they are “ready” to launch significant fundraising campaigns that will bolster their work.
In this experience, I have found that it is a very rare case that an organization is 100% ready to achieve its goals before it begins working toward them.
To quote Carter Chairman, @BobCarter, we usually have to “ride the bicycle while we build it.”
Why? Outrageous goals require a sense of urgency and declare that business as usual is not enough, not sustainable, not market-leading or on a personal level, not fulfilling.
Driven by this urgency, we cannot wait for perfection, we must build short-term goals that get us to the Outrageous Goal.
By taking this approach and finding the tangible path forward to an Outrageous Goal, I have helped organizations raise billions of dollars for very important causes.
The Roles of Long-Term Outrageous Goals and Short-Term Goals
Long-term Outrageous Goals can take years, even decades, to achieve. They are the north star guiding your every move and the overarching purpose that gives meaning to the daily grind. On an individual level, these are our foundational ambitions that define who we are, what we value, and what good we want to create in the world.
In contrast, short-term goals are the building blocks, the daily wins that keep us moving forward. These are the objectives that, while perhaps smaller in scale, are no less important. They give us momentum, teach us how to adjust our plans in the face of roadblocks, and provide the energy needed to keep striving toward that larger, more expansive, Outrageous Goal.

The first job interview I had in college was with a large Fortune 500 company. When the interviewer asked me what I saw myself doing in the future, I replied “I expect to be leading a major company and making a difference.” In fact, I might have actually said “I will be the ceo of a big innovative company.” And while I don’t think he laughed at me, he did say, “I don’t see that happening.”
In fairness to him, I am sure I had no idea of what it took to be a CEO, but I was already developing my own CEO Mindset. Despite the title, the CEO Mindset is not an approach limited to those wearing the CEO title; it is a way of thinking that anyone can embrace. At its core, the CEO Mindset is about being and becoming limitless, seeing opportunities where others see obstacles, and having the resilience to keep pushing forward even in the face of adversity.
Outrageous Goals in Action
The CEO Mindset requires a positive outlook, an ability to see beyond the immediate challenges, and a relentless focus on the end goal.
Skills like boldly making decisions, learning from your and the mistakes of others, and adopting the pursuit of knowledge go a long way toward building your ability and confidence to navigate through uncertainty. It is also a mindset that embraces continuous learning and self-improvement.
When Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo, took the helm, she set an Outrageous Goal: to transform PepsiCo into a company that not only delivered financial success but also made a positive world impact. This was no small feat, but she was determined.
She introduced “Performance with Purpose” (PwP), an initiative aimed at making PepsiCo a leader in sustainable business practices. Under her leadership, the company’s portfolio shifted toward healthier products; environmental sustainability became a core focus, and the company’s financial performance soared. Her Outrageous Goal was not just about making PepsiCo a better company; it was about making the world a better place through PepsiCo’s actions.
Nooyi’s story is a powerful example of how Outrageous Goals, when pursued with the right mindset, can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
