The Power of Parent-School Collaboration: A Pharo Schools Approach

by Joy Kimani

In the realm of education, a strong relationship between home and school is a catalyst for student success. At Pharo Schools, this collaborative approach is deeply ingrained in our mission, extending across our campuses in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as Kigali, Somaliland, Ethiopia, and beyond. Our commitment to parent-school collaboration is rooted in the belief that it fosters well-rounded, confident, and empowered learners.

Research-Based Evidence:

Numerous studies underscore the profound impact of parent-school collaboration on student achievement. Research by the National PTA (Parent Teacher Association) found that students whose parents are actively involved in their education are more likely to have higher grades, better attendance, and improved behaviour. Additionally, a meta-analysis conducted by the University of Maryland found that parental involvement can significantly boost student achievement, especially in areas such as reading and mathematics. This evidence highlights that when schools and parents work together, students are more likely to thrive academically and socially.

Pharo Schools' Approach:

At Pharo Schools, we believe that parental involvement is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. We strive to create a supportive and collaborative environment where parents and teachers can work together to meet the unique needs of each student. Here’s how we foster this relationship:

  1. Open Communication: We prioritise open and transparent communication between parents and teachers. Regular parent-teacher conferences and newsletters provide avenues for sharing information, discussing concerns, and celebrating achievements. This ongoing dialogue ensures that parents are informed about their child’s progress and can address any challenges promptly.
  2. Shared Goals: We work closely with parents to set shared goals for each student. This includes holding academic open days each term, where in-depth conversations are held among teachers, parents, and learners. During these sessions, specific targets and goals are collaboratively established, creating a consistent and supportive learning environment as everyone works together towards achieving them.
  3. Parent Education Workshops: Our workshops empower parents with strategies to support their child's learning at home. For example, we advise parents on effective study habits, such as the Pomodoro Technique, which involves studying in focused bursts followed by short breaks. We also discuss time management strategies, encouraging parents to help their children create daily schedules that prioritise schoolwork while allowing time for relaxation and play. Additionally, we provide resources like study guides and links to online educational tools, such as Khan Academy and ABC mouse, to support learning outside the classroom.
  4. Learner Discipline Policy: Pharo School Nairobi recently launched a comprehensive learner discipline policy, underscoring our commitment to maintaining high standards of behaviour and respect. Importantly, parents were actively involved in reviewing, reading, and consenting to this policy. By working together, parents and teachers aim to reinforce the discipline standards at school and at home, ensuring consistency and strengthening our collaboration. This collaborative approach enables us to provide a cohesive support system that encourages positive behaviour and accountability among our students.

Testimonials:

Parents have expressed the positive impact of these initiatives on their families. One parent shared, "Since joining Pharo Schools, I’ve learned so much about how to support my child’s education. The workshops on study habits and time management have made a real difference. My daughter is now more organised and motivated than ever." Another parent noted, "The open communication with teachers has made it easier for me to understand what my child needs to succeed. I feel more connected to the school and involved in my child’s learning."

Evidence of Success:

Our commitment to parent-school collaboration is reflected in our academic outcomes. Pharo Schools consistently outperform local benchmarks, with our students achieving an average grade of 78% in national assessments—significantly higher than the regional average of 67%. These results underscore the effectiveness of our collaborative approach and the positive impact of parental involvement on student success.

The power of parent-school collaboration cannot be overstated. By working together, parents and teachers can create a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters student success. At Pharo Schools, we are committed to building strong relationships that empower our students to reach their full potential. Let’s continue to collaborate and create a brighter future for our children.
