The Power of Place – Where Are You Dwelling?

The Power of Place – Where Are You Dwelling?

Have you ever been in a place where you truly felt you belonged?

Some spaces have a unique energy that unlocks parts of us—bringing out aspects of who we are that might otherwise remain hidden.

Recently, I traveled to Southeast Asia on a business tour after being absent from that part of the world for a few years. The moment I arrived, I felt a profound shift. The vibrancy of the region, the warmth of the people, and the seamless blend of tradition and modernity touched something deep within me. It reminded me of how certain places don’t just host us—they shape us, call us to connect, and sometimes even help us rediscover ourselves.

Philosopher Martin Heidegger explored this idea, suggesting that places and spaces are not just passive settings but active participants in shaping us.

As he wrote:

"Space is not something that faces man. It is neither an external object nor an inner experience. It is something that man has to discover in his dwelling."

The spaces we inhabit call us to connect, grow, and belong. The right environment fosters authenticity and creativity, helping us thrive. In these spaces, we’re not just present—we’re alive, discovering ourselves and engaging with the world in ways that are grounding and transformational.

"We shape our buildings, and afterward, our buildings shape us." – Winston Churchill

But what happens when the spaces we inhabit work against us? Environments that disconnect us from our values or constrain our potential can leave us feeling stuck, disengaged, or even isolated. Over time, these places sap our energy and erode our sense of purpose.

This brings up a vital question:

What are the spaces you inhabit most?

Think beyond geography to include your workplace, virtual spaces, and the communities you’re part of. Are these spaces enabling you to express your potential and align with your purpose? Or are they limiting your growth and keeping you from thriving?

If you find yourself in spaces that hold you back, here are three steps to take action:

1. Reflect: Recognize what’s not working.

Take a step back and critically assess your space. What feels limiting? Is it the culture, relationships, or a misalignment with your values? Reflection helps you understand not only what’s wrong but also how it’s affecting your mindset, energy, and goals.

Ask yourself:

  • What is this space asking of me, and does it align with my authentic self?
  • How does this environment influence my growth and potential?
  • Are there moments when I feel disconnected or disengaged?

2. Reassess: Define the environment you need to thrive.

Envision what a better space looks like. Thriving environments inspire, challenge, and support you. Ask:

  • What kind of culture or atmosphere helps me perform at my best?
  • Do I need more autonomy, collaboration, or creativity?
  • What dynamics bring out my strengths and align with my values?

This clarity allows you to move toward spaces that empower your growth.

3. Realign: Take steps to move forward.

Change begins with action. Start by reshaping the spaces you already inhabit:

  • Set boundaries to protect your values and energy.
  • Initiate conversations to address challenges.
  • Build micro-environments of support, whether within your team or through external networks.

If the environment is beyond repair, consider exploring new spaces or roles that align with your vision for growth. Realigning isn’t always about leaving; sometimes it’s about reshaping your relationship with the space.

Choosing the right spaces isn’t just an act of self-care—it’s essential for becoming the leader of your own life.

Whether you lead in an organization or in your own life, the environments you inhabit shape not only your growth but also the impact you create. Being intentional about the spaces you dwell in is a powerful step toward building a life of well-being, purpose, and influence.

Recap:

The spaces we inhabit—whether physical, mental, emotional, or even digital—shape who we are and who we can become. From the communities we engage with to the social media and tech spaces we frequent, these environments influence our mindset, energy, and growth. By reflecting on what’s not working, reassessing the spaces we need to thrive, and taking steps to realign with empowering environments, we create the foundation for meaningful growth and fulfillment. The environments we choose—be they physical, virtual, or social—play a profound role in helping us lead more vibrant, purposeful lives.
