Welcome to the world of self-coaching

Welcome to the world of self-coaching, a transformative practice that empowers you to take charge of your growth and development.

Self-coaching isn't just a personal tool—it's a professional superpower. It enhances self-awareness, sharpens decision-making, and deepens one's ability to support others.

What Is Self-Coaching?

Self-coaching is the practice of using reflective techniques, questions, and strategies to guide your growth. It's about stepping into the dual role of coach and coachee—challenging yourself, celebrating your progress, and staying accountable to your goals.

The beauty of self-coaching is its accessibility. It doesn't require elaborate systems or expensive programs. It involves curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to engage deeply with your thoughts and actions.

"If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you" - Fred DeVito

The Benefits of Self-Coaching

  1. Increased Self-Awareness: Regular self-coaching helps you understand your motivations, emotions, and behaviours.
  2. Empowerment: It puts you in the driver's seat of your growth journey, developing independence and confidence.
  3. Improved Decision-Making: By reflecting on choices and their outcomes, you refine your ability to make better decisions.
  4. Continuous Growth: Self-coaching creates a structured approach to personal and professional development.
  5. Stronger Leadership Skills: Your ability to guide others improves when you practice guiding yourself.

How to Make Self-Coaching a Habit

Self-coaching is most effective when it becomes a regular practice. Here are a few tips for embedding it into your daily or weekly routine:

  1. Schedule It: Block out time on your calendar for self-coaching sessions, just like you would for meetings or workouts.
  2. Start Small: Begin with 5-10 minutes of self-coaching a day. Gradually extend the time as you get comfortable.
  3. Create a Trigger: Pair your self-coaching habit with an existing routine, such as your morning coffee or evening journaling.
  4. Track Your Progress: Use a journal or app to record your reflections, insights, and progress over time.

Action Step: Review your calendar now and decide when you can schedule your first sel-coaching session. Then, time-block it!

10 Powerful Self-Coaching Tools

It's helpful to use specific tools and techniques to make self-coaching effective. Below are 10 tools you can implement immediately to accelerate your growth.

The Daily Reflection Journal

Set aside 5-10 minutes at the end of each day to reflect on key moments. What went well? What could have gone better? This simple habit sharpens your self-awareness over time.

The Wheel of Life

This tool helps you assess balance across key areas of your life (e.g., career, health, relationships, personal growth). Rate each area on a scale of 1-10 and identify which areas need more focus.

The "Stop, Start, Continue" Framework

Review your habits and behaviours by asking:

  • What should I stop doing?
  • What should I start doing?
  • What should I continue doing?

Visualisation Exercises

Spend 5-10 minutes each morning visualising your ideal day or long-term goals. This will prime your brain for success and keep your focus sharp.

Self-Coaching Questions Deck

Create a deck of self-coaching questions (see the next section for ideas). Draw one or two cards each day to prompt reflection.

Strengths and Values Audit

Identify your core strengths and values. Regularly reflect on how well your current actions align with these.

The "Three Wins" Practice

At the end of the day, write down three wins—no matter how small. This builds positivity and a sense of progress.

The 90-Day Plan

Break down your long-term goals into actionable 90-day plans. Review your progress and adjust your focus at the end of each period.

The Growth Journal

Create a dedicated journal where you track your learning moments—both successes and failures. Over time, this becomes a treasure trove of insights.

The Accountability Check-In

Set a weekly date with yourself to review your progress. Use this time to celebrate wins, address challenges, and recalibrate your focus.

Action Step: Decide which two of the above you will start using regularly and get started with them today. Remember, consistency builds habits.

"By banishing doubt and trusting your intuition, you create a space for the power of intention to flow through" - Dr Wayne Dyer

10 Powerful Self-Coaching Questions

The heart of self-coaching lies in asking yourself powerful, thought-provoking questions. These questions are designed to challenge your assumptions, uncover insights, and guide your growth.

Here are 10 questions to incorporate into your self-coaching practice:

What's my biggest priority right now, and why is it important?

This question helps you clarify what truly matters and avoid getting distracted by less important tasks.

What's holding me back from achieving my goals?

Uncover the internal or external barriers preventing progress and start brainstorming solutions.

What's one small action I can take today to move closer to my goal?

Focus on progress over perfection by identifying actionable steps.

How am I aligning my actions with my core values?

Reflect on whether your daily decisions honour what you stand for.

What patterns do I notice in my successes and failures?

Identifying recurring themes can help you replicate success and address weaknesses.

How do I handle setbacks, and what can I learn from them?

This encourages resilience by reframing failure as an opportunity for growth.

What's one thing I've been avoiding, and why?

Avoidance often signals fear or uncertainty. This question brings avoidance into the light so you can address it.

Who can I learn from, and what can I learn?

Growth isn't always solitary. Reflect on mentors, colleagues, or even role models who can inspire you.

What assumptions am I making about this situation?

Challenging assumptions can reveal new perspectives and solutions.

How will I celebrate my progress, no matter how small?

Acknowledging wins builds momentum and keeps you motivated.

Action Step: Choose two of these questions to answer daily over the next two weeks and write down your answers each day.

Self-coaching is one of the most empowering skills you can develop for yourself. By integrating powerful tools and transformative questions into your routine, you can unlock your potential and accelerate your self-growth.

The beauty of self-coaching lies in its adaptability. Whether you're navigating a career challenge, seeking personal clarity, or striving to lead others more effectively, these techniques can be tailored to your unique goals and circumstances.

Now, it's your turn.

Take two tools or questions from above and put them into practice today.

Over time, you'll be amazed at the impact of consistent self-coaching on your life and work. Remember that consistency compounds over time.

Here's to unlocking your potential—one powerful question at a time.
