The power of technology to transform humanity
We recently hosted a super brainy guy @davideagleman who is an expert on all things to do with the brain. He gave a Shannon Luminary Lecture at our facility in Bell Labs NJ and a summary of the topics discussed are shared in the short video interview with @marcusweldon (President of Bell Labs) shown below.
In the lecture David shared some of the nuances on how the brain perceives the world. It became clear through the lecture and discussions that if we understand how the brain functions only then we can develop technology to transform humanity by taking advantage of the brains immense capability to process all kinds of information. One example he provided was a haptic vest that can teach deaf people how to hear and teach blind people how to see by sensing the world using technology and converting those digital signals into physical signals on the vest (vibrations) which the brain then interprets as sound or sight.
For me this was an eye opener on the power of technology to transform humanity - to be able to give back a lost sense to someone is a powerful thing and we must all remember as technologists that our end goal is to help humanity with our technology.
The end goal of everything we do should be to solve a human need and make the world a better place.

7yHey Theresa - thank you for sharing. I agree with your comment that we need to do a better job inspiring younger and more diverse talent to become passionate about STEM. We have many efforts in this area working with schools across the world and also by infusing the Arts (A) in STEM to create STEAM. Linking the humanities with technology and solving human needs is the key to get people more involved. Donhnaill

7yDavid Eagleman is always fascinating. If I'd seen maths and science through the lens of transforming humanity when I was in high school, I might have been bold enough to overcome my math phobia and pursue STEM studies. At a former incarnation of Nokia, I had great pleasure in getting to learn about some of the long-term research going on in Nokia Labs. Thank you, Domhnaill Hernon for sharing this and other current Nokia Bell Labs stories.
