Power Up: Actionable Tips for Scaling Your Brand

Power Up: Actionable Tips for Scaling Your Brand

Hey 👋

Airbnb’s journey from a small start-up to a global powerhouse has been well-documented and multifaceted.

What we wanted to focus on was how they used a deep understanding of their audience to build a connection and ultimately drive growth.

This audience-first positioning was articulated with the "Belong Anywhere" campaign, which not only reshaped the company's image but also left an unforgettable mark within the hospitality industry.

Let’s dive into the core elements of Airbnb’s campaign and extract actionable marketing tips to help you understand how to scale your brand effectively.

🔬Understanding your audience at the core

Airbnb’s "Belong Anywhere" campaign was born out of a simple yet powerful idea: to make everyone feel like they belong, no matter where they are in the world. This understanding of their audience’s desires enabled Airbnb to create a message that resonated on a global scale.

Actionable Tip 1: Prioritise audience research

  • Begin with thorough audience research to uncover their core desires and needs that your brand can address. This deep understanding will be the heart of your brand and marketing strategies, ensuring your message resonates with your target audience.

📖 Leveraging storytelling

By weaving the real stories of hosts and guests into the fabric of their campaign Airbnb didn’t just tell a story; they told their audience’s story. This is a key way to communicate your brand authentically.

Actionable Tip 2: Make your audience the hero

  • Use your platform to share customers' journeys and experiences with your brand. Real stories where the audience sees themselves not just as consumers but as integral parts of the brand can significantly enhance loyalty, making your brand more relatable and memorable.

🌏 Community Building

The "Belong Anywhere" campaign was more than a message; it was an invitation to be part of a global community.  By engaging both hosts and guests, Airbnb created a sense of belonging and loyalty, turning users into brand advocates.

Actionable Tip 3: Engage your audience as community members

  • Create spaces for your audience to connect, share, and grow together Whether through social media, online, or events, a vibrant community centred around your brand can drive both retention and acquisition.

💻 Seamless User Experience

Airbnb backed up its branding with a seamless user experience. From an intuitive website to a hassle-free booking process, every touchpoint reinforced the "Belong Anywhere" message, making it easy for users to embrace and advocate for the brand.

Actionable Tip 4: Align User Experience with Brand Message

  • Audit your customer journey to ensure every interaction reflects your brand message. Invest in user experience improvements to eliminate friction and make it easier for customers to engage with your brand. Remember, a positive experience is sharable and can significantly boost your brand’s appeal.

🕵️ Utilising Audience Insights

Airbnb’s use of technology and insights (data analytics and machine learning), to personalise user experiences and optimise their services played a crucial role in amplifying the impact of their campaign.

Actionable Tip 5: Harness the Power of Technology

  • Leverage technology to enhance your marketing strategy. Use data analytics to understand customer behavior and preferences, and tailor your communications and offerings accordingly.

Conclusion

Airbnb’s "Belong Anywhere" campaign is a masterclass in brand building with its success lying in its audience-centric approach. By deeply understanding and connecting with their audience,  Airbnb created a campaign that built a brand and a community. The lesson is clear: the heat of impactful branding and scaling lies in knowing your audience. Dig deep into audience insights (or ask The Scale Up to 😉) and let them guide your path to building a brand that truly resonates.

It's one thing to create a potentially strong brand. Airbnb's new CEO says the business is built on a poor foundation. Airbnb's latest strategic move seems to be designed to further undermine its business and brand - nothing short of insanity. My wife and I have 2 properties listed with AirBnB, one in Australia and the other in Princeton Rd West Sacramento CA, the latter being listed in my wife's name. She has received an email from AirBnB USA advising, as of April 30, 2024, security cameras are no longer allowed inside AirBnB listed properties. I have not received this notice for our Australian property. If this is a new AirBnB policy, I suggest AirBnB urgently review and remove it. Security cameras are global best practice in all common areas in all accommodation properties for the protection of the property, guests and owners alike. In these increasingly violent times where an increasing proportion of people do not respect other's property and persons, this decision is nothing short of dangerous corporate stupidity. Should this policy change stand, we will review and almost certainly withdraw from AirBnB participation; as I'm sure, will many others.

Super valuable tips for approaching brand building! Aligning user experience with brand messaging is especially important... You start by understanding your audience and building your story from the bottom up, but your audience will "read" you on every occasion they engage with your brand. And first impressions count 😍
