Product to Platform to Ecosystem

Product to Platform to Ecosystem

1.] Products to 2.] Platforms to 3.] Ecosystems

The complexity (technical + operational) and value creation (new opportunities) amplify as organizations transform from 1 to 3.

But does it mean that every organization has to?

The answer is "NO".

We often hear "Disrupt or be Disrupted" or "Digital Changes Everything"

Digital transformation is not an objective state that an organization needs to achieve, but rather a set of strategic choices by the executive team among the alternatives.

Choices of transformation by adaptation or selection or balancing both.

Each organization has to understand its current position and value and what will make them survive, sustain, and scale, its future position and value.

When organizations say "It is in our DNA". A particular DNA structure defines us as a Human or a Cat. Minor changes in DNA structure can throw one out of its defined category.

It is hard to change the DNA structure.

So, what is your organization's DNA?

How we as humans/organizations survive in the environment, without changing our DNA is "adaptation".

Selection is a conscious or natural (forced by environment/nature) mutation in our DNA structure to become a cyborg, which may be better than us today to help our next generation continue to adapt to the future environment.

Digital transformation has different meanings in different industries, and even in different organizations within the same industry. It may even have different meanings in the same organization, especially a global organization that spans geographies and businesses.

Can you identify the possibilities for how value is created and captured with Digitalization in your organization and industry?

Do you adapt or select?
