Productivity Through Learning
Over the past couple of years, the workplace has seen many changes. Working from home, utilizing new technology, and the online working method have undoubtedly changed how we work.
During periods of change, while companies were struggling to adapt and keep up, there was bound to be a negative effect on employee productivity. The early days of the pandemic proved to be hard for Google as they noticed a dip in productivity, especially at the junior level of employees.
Rather than taking short-term measures, Google decided to tackle this problem right at its roots. By doubling down and focusing on training, they focused on developing employees' skill sets and abilities.
However, Google's training methods were delivered differently.
Rather than solely relying on 3rd parties for training sessions, Google has a training network in a place called "g2g" (Googler-to-Googler). A completely employee-driven network where each employee voluntarily signs up for training modules created by their colleagues. These individuals offer first-hand knowledge from different fields to promote a learning culture at Google.
Apart from the junior level employees taking up training modules from their senior coaches, Google used other methods to evaluate the depth of the problem. They conducted various pulse surveys to understand what was essential to the new working format and assess their productivity. The introduction and promotion of employee resource groups at Google allowed the employees to feel secure as they had some support structure. Lastly, Google introduced more granular team meetings and frequent check-ins with employees to take away the feeling of working in isolation.

Through these steps, Google is now experiencing productivity levels that are beginning to match pre-pandemic days.
Although the global situation may be uncertain, Google's approach to this problem showed that by investing in your employees and cultivating their skills, one could align personal and organizational goals, regardless of the workplace environment.
Although Google isn't the first company to emphasize learning, its method to tackle their lowered productivity levels is admirable.
The employee-run training network allows the employees to voluntarily take on modules taught by their colleagues. Rather than posing the training modules as a formality, the employees are encouraged to take what appeals to them. Thus, creating a supportive atmosphere of learning and curiosity. Additionally, the employee contributions towards the modules would feel appreciated as their work would be recognized across the organization, thus boosting their morale.
Workforce training has been one of the go-to methods to increase productivity. However, Google managed to put its take on this method. They tackled their productivity issue by encouraging employees to learn and teach simultaneously.
