The Correct Order to Apply Skincare Products

STEP 1: CLEANSER 🎊🎊

In the morning, start by splashing your face with warm water or, if you must, wash with a gentle face cleanser designed for your skin type.

STEP 2: TONER 🎊🎊

Most people choose to skip toners, partly because there’s a lingering assumption that most toners are harsh and irritate the skin. Fortunately, that’s not the case anymore. While they don’t physically “shrink” pores, the new breed of toners can serve multiple purposes, like act as a delivery system for antioxidants, vitamin-B derivatives and even toning acids. Additionally, each type of toner is intended for a different skin issue, so it’s important to use the right kind for your skin concern.

However, if you have lived all your life without using a toner and your skin looks healthy, Dr. Rogers says there is no need to start using one. “Toners were created to help return the skin’s pH after it became too basic from harsh soaps,” explains Dr. Rogers. “Face cleansers are now so much better balanced that toners are not a required step for me.” That said, if you have a toner that you like using, there’s no harm in sticking with it.

STEP 3: ANTIOXIDANT SERUM 🎊🎊

Serums are super-concentrated, nutrient-dense treatments that address specific concerns, so it’s better to keep them as close to the skin as possible. There are various serums available on the market today, but for daytime, Dr. Rogers recommends antioxidant serums, which provide a variety of benefits—from blunting your skin’s inflammatory response to neutralizing damage from UV rays and environmental pollutants.

STEP 4: EYE CREAM 🎊🎊

According to Dr. Annie Chiu, a board-certified dermatologist, it’s vital to apply an eye cream at least every night—if not twice a day—starting in your 20s. “It’s about maintaining the health and thickness of the eyelid skin. Improving the skin quality in this area early on ensures that the eyelid skin does not easily lose laxity and its smooth appearance later on.”

For best results, consistency is key. “Regular use of eye cream over time will keep the eyelid skin elastic and can improve or prevent against some fine lines or collagen loss. Remember: Nothing is magic. Results don’t occur overnight,” Dr. Chiu adds. “You can further protect the delicate skin around your eyes by choosing an eye cream with SPF or applying sunscreen every day.” Dr. Chiu also advises people to remember to wear sunglasses when outside to protect against UV-light damage and lines that can creep up around the corners of your eyes from squinting.

STEP 5: SPOT TREATMENT 🎊🎊

According to Dr. Diane De Fiori, a dermatologist at Rosacea Treatment Clinic, prescription medications and acne spot treatments need to be applied as close to the skin as possible to maximize their benefits.

As acne spot treatments differ in active ingredients, check your product packaging or consult your dermatologist for the best way to apply it. Prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide, a common acne spot-treatment ingredient, has a one-to-three-hour working time, according to esthetician and acne specialist Ashley Wiley. “Any cream that comes in contact with it before it has completed its work will likely inhibit the active ingredient from working properly.”

Remember that acne spot treatments can dry out your skin, so always apply only on spots where you need it.

STEP 6: MOISTURIZER 🎊🎊

Yes, everyone needs a moisturizer, even if you have oily skin. “Even though your body has its own natural lubricating system consisting of glands that secrete oil (or sebum) to maintain a protective coating against harsh outside conditions and infections, most of us do need extra hydration after the havoc that sun, weather and harsh chemicals wreak on our skin,” explains Dr. Sandra Kopp, a board-certified dermatologist.

Most experts recommend that the best time to apply a moisturizer is while the skin is still damp, so the sooner you go through applying your serum and treatment, the sooner you’re able to lock in much-needed hydration with your moisturizer.

If you’re using an acne spot treatment, you may want to skip those areas when applying your moisturizer to make sure the ingredients in it won’t interfere with the active ingredients in your spot treatment.

Step 7: SUNSCREEN 🎊🎊

Sunscreen should be the last step in your daytime skin care routine if you’re using a physical or mineral sunscreen, which works by physically blocking UV rays. This step becomes tricky when you’re using a chemical sunscreen.

Dr. Rogers explains: “Chemical sunscreens have to be absorbed into the skin to be effective, so applying after your moisturizer will delay and hinder that. However, if you apply your chemical sunscreen before your moisturizer, your moisturizer will not work as well either because the skin is coated with chemical sunscreen.”

To get around this, Dr. Rogers recommends using a physical sunscreen with zinc and to apply it after your moisturizer. “Zinc is safe, effective and provides the broadest protection against UVA and UVB rays.”

As for those who like using chemical sunscreens, try to look for a formula that offers moisturizing benefits, so you can get your daily hydration needs while protecting your skin.

💔25 Skincare Habits for 🔅GREAT SKIN🔅

1. Cleansing In Morning & Evening. (A Facial Cleansing Brush is A MUST)

( + Going to sleep without removing your makeup is a huge no-no!).

2. Moisturize Religiously, Every Single Day.

It’s the most important thing for good skin. Look for products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, emollients.

3. Nourish At Night With Products That Help Your Skin Heal And Restore.

Look for products that include: peptides, antioxidants, retinoids (vitamin A), nourishing oils (olive oil / avocado oil / jojoba oil / argan oil / shea butter or cocoa butter).

4. Do An Oil Cleanse Once In A While.

The simplest way to do it is to clean your face as you always do, then spend 10-15 minutes massaging your skin with the oil of your choice, in circular motions. Once you’re done, take a clean hand towel, dampen it with warm (even slightly hot) water and gently remove the oily residue from your face.

5. For Good Skin, Apply Serums Daily.

For good skin, invest in a good serum with a specific function and use it every day before applying your face cream. Once you finish one serum, pick another that targets another skincare problem to help your skin heal in many different ways.

6. Use Face Masks Once/Twice A Week.

Various face masks can give your skin an extra boost and offer a quick fix for things like dryness, tired or dull-looking skin, too much shine, or irritation.

7. Visit A Dermatologist When Needed.

If you feel confused with your skin and all the skincare options available out there, it never hurts to consult a professional who can help you guide in the right direction towards good skin.

8. Treat Spots As Soon As They Pop Up.

As soon as you see a pimple or zit coming up, apply an antibacterial spot treatment to prevent it from growing and getting infected. Look for products that contain tea tree oil, salicylic acid , vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide or kaolin clay.

9. Never Squeeze Blemishes And Pimples.

Touching, squeezing, “trying to pop it out” usually just get things worse and can also leave you with scars and pigmentation that are quite hard to get rid of. Instead of touching, apply a spot treatment or concealer that has anti-acne ingredients.

10. Use SPF Protection Daily.

This is a must even in winter. Sun rays are very harmful to our skin and not only can they age your skin faster… They can also cause skin cancver. To prevent that, simply use SPF cream or lotion every day and reapply every 3-4 hours if you can. You can also find mineral loose powders that contain SPF in them.

11. Steam Your Face Once In A While. (A Facial Steamer Can Help You!)

Steaming allows your pores to open up, so it becomes easier to deep clean your skin + all your serums, masks, and creams absorb a lot better. It’s a great part of at-home facial and is recommended once a week for most skin types.

12. Exfoliate Your Skin – Gently And Regularly.

Depending on your skin type, you may want to do this more or less often, but every skin type benefits from exfoliation. To keep it gentle, look for non-mechanic exfoliators that contain low(!) concentrations of glycolic acid, lactic acid, or AHA acids.

13. Good Skin Needs Food – Incorporate Oils In Your Skincare.

Don’t be afraid to use oils, even if you have acne-prone skin.Oils are extremely rich in nutrients, moisturizers, and antioxidants and can offer great value to any skin type!

14. Massage Your Skin When You Apply Skincare. (Jade Roller Gua Sha Set)

Massaging your skin improves circulation, elasticity and helps prevent sagging. Just remember to do it gently and it’s always a great idea to watch a few videos of professional face massage to know the best moves. ( Jade Roller Gua Sha Set )

15. Sleep Mostly On Your Back.

This may not be for everyone, but if you can control it, sleeping on your back is the best position to sleep if you want to protect your skin. Sleeping on your side, or even on your face can promote the formation of wrinkles and saggy skin.

16. Try Not To Frown Too Much.

Doing a lot of facial expressions eventually leads to smile wrinkles, forehead wrinkles, and similar wrinkly stuff. To prevent that, try to keep your face relaxed and naturally resting whenever it’s possible.

17. Use Silk Or Satin Pillows.

Silk pillows are wonderful for your skin, especially if it’s sensitive. Silk is a natural and very soft material, therefore your skin gets less irritated at night. A straight way to good skin!

18. Use A Humidifier At Night (And Day If You Can!).

Cool Mist Humidifier

One of the fastest ways to lose a ton of moisture in your skin is sitting in a heavily heated area. Sun heat in summer and heaters in winter do exactly that. To keep your skin happy and moisture-rich, use a cool mist humidifier. Your nose will thank you as well!

19. Protect Your Skin From Cold, Rain, And Winds.

Environmental factors can be just as damaging to your skin as pollution. In colder months, protect your skin by choosing thicker products and consider using both liquid foundation and powder foundation to create a sort of “blanket” for your skin (try to keep it natural-looking though!).

20. Drink A Lot of Water, Every Day.

It’s hard to keep your skin moist and supple if it’s not hydrated internally. Sip on H2O throughout the day to keep your skin happy and healthy.

21. Eat A Healthy, Clean Diet.

The fastest way to blemishes, acne, and dull-looking skin is a bad diet, filled with processed foods, trans-fats, and way too much sugar. On the other hand, eating a healthy and clean diet helps your skin detox, regulates sebum production, feeds the skin, and accelerates regeneration.

22. Exercise Regularly.

Sometimes our skin breaks out because our body is having a hard time getting rid of various toxins. Exercising is a perfect way to help your body because you’re sweating a lot of those toxins out with sweat. Bonus benefits – it makes your body look and feel better!

23. Sleep Enough (Or More If You Can!).

Beauty sleep is not a myth. Our skin regenerates faster in our sleep and starts to look tired when we don’t sleep enough. Get your sleep hours in for good skin.

24. Clean Your Makeup Brushes Regularly.

Another common reason for breakouts, irritation, skin allergies, and clogged pores – dirty makeup brushes. Make sure to clean them regularly.

25. Choose Products That Are Right For Your Skin Type.

If your skin is dry, but you’re using products formulated for oily skin, it just increases the dryness. Always choose appropriate products for your skin and test it for a few days/weeks before deciding if it’s good for your skin.
