Making a career choice and sticking to it is not as easy as it sounds, especially in the dynamic and often unpredictable job market in the “post-pandemic” world. It can be nerve-wracking to choose or alter a professional path, especially when you’re not sure if it will ultimately direct you toward your long-term goals. For those recently laid off, this decision may feel even more daunting, adding a sense of urgency and pressure that may directly affect the decisions you make.
So, how do you navigate these crossroads and confidently select the path that aligns with your aspirations and leads to a fulfilling career? Here are some key considerations:
Acknowledge and Value Your Efforts:
- Self-Reflection: Take stock of your professional accomplishments to date. What skills and expertise have you developed inside and outside your functional expertise? What unique experiences have shaped you and differentiate you from others who are also seeking professional growth opportunities? How do these align with your desired career trajectory?
- Benchmarking: Research individuals in your target roles. What are their educational backgrounds, professional experiences, and career paths? How do your qualifications measure up? Do you believe that a hiring manager or HR professional would believe you are truly qualified for the role you aspire to? If not, what is your plan to step up your game to change their beliefs?
- Cultivate Self-Belief: Trust in your abilities and the hard work you've invested in your development over your years as a professional. This confidence will be invaluable as you navigate the challenges ahead.
Define and Prioritize Your Career Goals:
- Clarity is Key: What are your long-term aspirations? What kind of impact do you want to make? What level of responsibility and autonomy are you seeking? What compensation level is required? What locations are acceptable to you in terms of the city & state where you work, as well as how you work, i.e. – in the office, remote or hybrid?
- Evaluate Options: Analyze potential career paths through the lens of your goals. Does each option offer a clear path towards achieving your aspirations?
- Consider Your "Why": Why are these goals important to you? Understanding your underlying motivations will provide a strong foundation for your decision-making.
Choose for the Right Reasons:
- Intrinsic Motivation: Avoid making career choices solely based on external factors like societal expectations, peer pressure, or the allure of high compensation. You will likely spend as much time (or more) than anything else you do in your life, so trying to ensure that you actually “like” what you do is a very important consideration.
- Personal Fulfillment: Prioritize your own happiness and well-being. Will this path allow you to leverage your strengths, interests, skill sets, backgrounds and values?
- Family Considerations: Factor in the needs and priorities of your loved ones. How will this career choice impact your family life in the short and long term? If you have young children that you’re committed to spending as much time as you can with, but this dream job you’re considering forces you to travel 70 percent of the time, is this truly the “right” opportunity for you based on your priorities?
Uphold Your Values and Integrity:
- Ethical Considerations: Choose a path that aligns with your ethical principles and values. Avoid compromising your integrity for short-term gains and never compromise your beliefs. Above all, what’s ultimately important is sticking to what you believe in. It can be really tempting to jump at an offer that seems to have everything you ever wanted, with the “small” exception that you have to step on other toes to get to the top!
- Long-Term Vision: Consider the potential long-term impact of your choices. Will this path allow you to build a sustainable and fulfilling career that contributes positively to your legacy? Your community? Society as a whole?
- Embrace the Challenge: The most rewarding career paths often require overcoming significant obstacles. Be prepared to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks. Convince yourself to lean into
For those recently laid off:
- Leverage Your Experience: Frame your layoff as an opportunity for career exploration and reinvention. Utilize your newfound free time to reassess your skills, better understand the relationships that will be the most helpful, identify your passions, and explore new career avenues.
- Build Your Network: Attend industry events, expand your professional network by leveraging LinkedIn and connecting to the networks of your network, as well.
- Invest in Yourself: Utilize this time to enhance your skills through online courses, certifications, or professional development programs. It actually might be a great time to consider going back to school for the advanced degree you’ve always dreamed about.
Always remember that the path to a fulfilling career will never be straightforward and is definitely not without uncertainty, left turns and unique challenges. It demands honest self-reflection, careful consideration of your values and goals, and the courage to embrace the unknown.
Be patient with yourself, embrace the learning process, and never lose sight of your ultimate goals and aspirations. Sometimes the best road is the roughest road because at the end of it will be all the goals and successes you always dreamed of.
Use this opportunity to leverage the advice and counsel of your mentors and/or those individuals whose opinions you value and trust. Consider investing in a coach to be your safe and confidential thought partner to help you think more clearly about your decision and consideration process.
Ultimately, your career journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Continuously learn, adapt, and never lose sight of what truly matters to you. Good luck!
