Project A Collaborations X Black Semiconductor

Black Semiconductor is a fast-growing tech startup based in Aachen, Germany, pioneering the use of graphene - a groundbreaking 2D material - to create ultra-fast, energy-efficient, and scalable chip fabrics. Founded in 2020, they are redefining semiconductor technology by connecting thousands of chips to operate as a single, cohesive unit. As consumer demand for higher-performing devices continues to push the limits of traditional chip technology, Black Semiconductor is at the forefront, developing innovative solutions that overcome these challenges.

Project A ’s Talent Consulting Team has been in direct cooperation with Black Semiconductor (Black Semi) since December, 2021. We have placed some key hires such as: CCO, Director of Mixed Signals, Senior Director Design Enablement and other key positions.

Jay Carlos Nunez , Chief Commercial Officer of Black Semi has been playing a pivotal role in the growth of the company and shared his insights on the collaboration with Project A.

1. Why did you decide to work at Black Semi and how do you feel there?

I joined Black Semi a little less than a year ago, after spending ten years at AMD and more than 35 years in the semiconductor industry. I’ve had a diverse career across large multinational companies, mid-sized organizations, and startups, all within this field. My experience has been marked by constant evolution, both personally and within the industry. Early in 2023, I started reflecting on where I wanted my career to go next, and I realized I wanted a role where I could have an impact beyond my time at AMD. That’s when Szilvia reached out, and after a great conversation, I recognized it was a unique opportunity - not just with Black Semi but in the industry as a whole. Since joining, I’ve found it to be an exciting, fast-evolving environment. Black Semi is a great place to be. In these 11 months, I’ve learned about the role I can play as an industry influencer. Being part of a company driving significant change and enabling technological advancements has been fantastic.

2. What factors attracted you to join Black Semi, and could you describe your role within the company? Additionally, what are some significant milestones you have achieved during your time at Black?

Black Semi’s opportunity to influence the semiconductor industry really drew me in. It’s a high-paced industry, where customers expect constant innovation. Black Semi is positioned to commercialize groundbreaking technology and to make it accessible to the wider market. I was inspired by the opportunity to work with incredibly smart engineers and develop technologies that can provide real solutions for the industry. My role focuses on taking these innovations from the lab to market - essentially transitioning Black Semi from a research-driven company to a commercial-focused one. With commercial solutions still in the future, this year has been about building a commercial presence and laying the foundation for future growth. A few notable milestones have been shifting our digital presence to match a commercial brand and increasing brand awareness, such as transforming our website into an international website, renaming our domains and emails into .com and so on.

3. Having maintained close contact throughout the entire recruitment process, we are eager to inquire about how you felt during your own interview process and why you decided to move forward?

The process was very professional and engaging. My initial conversation with Project A, went so smoothly and professionally that I was so hooked in the conversation relating to Project A, that I almost forgot why I came to the interview (laughs). Given that Black Semi was making a significant decision to commercialize, Project A approached the process with diligence, ensuring I was the right fit for this transformative role. I was impressed with the structure of the interview and how well you guys communicated Black Semi’s vision and potential. The interview process took place entirely online but went smoothly. Face-to-face interactions were limited, but we adapted to virtual meetings, which were just as effective.

4. In your experience, what role does collaboration with Project A play in talent acquisition, and how has it contributed to the company's overall success and growth? Any stories you would like to share?

Project A was fantastic during the recruitment process. Their team has been highly supportive, not just with my transition but with talent acquisition overall. Our goal is to lead with innovative solutions with our graphene technology, which has the potential to transform the entire sector. Achieving this vision requires the very best people, and Project A has been instrumental in gathering those individuals.
